Your experience with HP Protect Tools
Hi,

I am asking my self if I should activate encryption on my 4700. Before doing anything stupid, I would like to learn your experience with this tool. Is it reliable? Stable? Is it easy to go back from it a recover all data? Is there any conflict with backup and specially, Sprite Backup (including the PC agent)?

The following thread shows that HPPT can cause the ipaq to get automatically on frequently :
http://www.ipaqhq.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13191

It seems that de-activating one function of HPPT is enough to solve this problem. I had some stability problems on my 4700 and now I have the impression that I have been able to solve them (Today Panel was one of the main problem sources). I would like to be sure that HPPT will not cause new problems...

So I would be grateful if you could share your experience with me.

Regards,

Murat

I'm one of the contributors to the thread that you earmarked.

I'm using HPPT (with the one setting applied).

I have some sensitive data on my PDA & HPPT is a good way of stopping the wrong people from seeing it; having said that, I have been in situations when I would have preferred my PDA to start up immediately, without having to wait for HPPT to do its thing (e.g. trying to make a note of something that was said at a meeting - by the time my PDA was fired up I has forgotten what I was going to write down!). At the end of the day it's a question of Security v. Ease of Use.

As for stability, I have had no problems; I would hope that this is because HPPT is OK, rather than me just being lucky! Any others had problems?

I had stability problems with it. And it is one of the apps that can contribute to the bluetooth issue.

I use Resco encryption on a few files that I really want protected and just the standard password for the rest.

I have yet to find PPC security app that just worked for me. I had one on my palm that was great. Hard reset after a certain number of incorrect passwords.

I know there are plenty PPC ones that do that, but I had consistent problems with any I tried.

It has been a while, perhaps I will try it again...I have nothing else to do this weekend

Takes way too long to reboot and turn on.

If you have sensitive data to protect, then definately use it. If you just use it to play games or go on the web or check your email, then why bother. I have used it since day 1, because I have sensitive data that needs to be encrypted. I have never had a problem with it or using Sprite Back up which I had to do twice.

From the time it takes me to press the power button and able to open my first app, it just takes me 6 seconds . Not to long for me!

Thank you very much for sharing your experience with me. I undestand from your posts that HPPT implies slower startup of the iPAQ. I do not have too strategic documents on my 4700, so I think that I will keep off HPPT and just use the standard password scheme (I know that it does not resist to a hard reset but it would give some mimimal protection for prying eyes not too much motivated and determined...).

Regards,

Murat
