File Explorer Qs
Hello Fellow 4705 users,

I was doing some exploring with the File Explorer, and I came up with the following questions...

1. There is a folder called \My Device\TEMP. Is it safe to delete the files in this folder (like in WinXP)? I would, of course, leave any files modified today.

2. When I go into \My Device\Windows\Programs, there is nothing showing. Is this normal. My 4705 is not having any problems. Hmmm....

3. What is the difference between \My Device\Program Files and \My Device\Windows\Programs?

4. Not really a File Explorer Q, but related: When I explore my device using ActiveSync, when I click on the "Explore" button, it brings up a Windows Explorer window with "My Pocket PC", and listed under that icon I can see all the themes and files that I loaded into \My Device\My Documents. I then go into \My Pocket PC\My Documents and see the files again. Its throwing me off as to where my files are actually being stored. Any ideas? Is my system messed up some how? I have attached a photo to better explain...

Anyways, thanks for reading this rather long winded post and I really appreciate the expert help provided here. I hope to one day be as smart about PDAs as everyone here.

Also, apologies if these Q's have been asked before. Have a limited time here during lunch to ask these questions.

Have a great day!

Rick

1. Some programs during execution will write temp files there. If there are no programs running it is completely safe to remove any files there.

2. Most programs when installed will reside in \Program Files. Some programs will write data files in \Windows\Programs. If there is anything there then don't remove it. If there is nothing there then don't worry about it.

3. This is explained briefly in #2. The \Windows\Programs folder can contain data files necessary for an application. The \Program Files folder contains the executables and other necessary files for a program to start and run.

4. The two folders are somewhat links to the same thing. Nothing is messed up.

How did a learn so much you ask?

Well it was community sites such as this as well as lots of reading. Trial by error doesn't hurt either.

Here's a bit more about your #4 question:
"4. Not really a File Explorer Q, but related: When I explore my device using ActiveSync, when I click on the "Explore" button, it brings up a Windows Explorer window with "My Pocket PC", and listed under that icon I can see all the themes and files that I loaded into \My Device\My Documents. I have attached a photo to better explain..."

The actual file location is \My Pocket PC\My Documents.
On mine, in Windows Explorer from my laptop I see Mobile Device. When you click it, the contents mimic those of the My Documents folder you see under \My Device\My Documents in File Explorer on the device itself. You also see an expandable folder called \My Pocket PC. Expanding My Pocket PC shows you the entire contents of your device (think of it as being at the Desktop level of your Windows XP directory tree, i.e. within it you see My Computer and My Documents as well as My Network Places if you have a network and the Recycle Bin). So to give an example:

PC to PPC directory structure comparison:
On a PC:
Desktop
Desktop\My Computer
Desktop\My Documents

On a PPC:
Mobile Device(shows contents of #3 below)
Mobile Device\My Pocket PC
Mobile Device\My Pocket PC\My Documents

On the PC, the My Documents folder off the Desktop is actually a shortcut to a directory something like c:\Documents & Settings\username\My Documents. On the PPC, the Mobile Device top level shows the contents of the My Documents folder as well as My Pocket PC (similar to the My Computer sublevel of Desktop on a PC).

I hope I made that clear enough. It's harder to explain than it is to understand. Once you "get it" it's kinda just second nature and something you don't even think about. Keep in mind both \My Device\My Documents AND \My Pocket PC\My Documents are showing you the same thing. Deleting files in either place deletes them in both. Adding files in either place adds them in both.

Quorlan,

Wow! Thanks for the detailed explanation! I now understand what I'm looking at. Its becomes easy when you finally understand what the relationships are. I appreciate the help!

No prob. Happy to help. I've been playing the PDA game since a time before most people knew what the acronym meant, so I can usually figure out what's going on and why with most of them. Plus, I happen to really like the Windows Mobile OS (as compared to any of the other mobile OS's like Palm or Symbian). If you need any more help, just ask.
