hx4700 and WM2005
Hey everyone, im new to the forums, and love what I see - so much great info here for the nubies amongst us

Haven't quite bought my hx4700 (though a Piel Frama case and boxwave crystal screen protectors for it are staring at me atm )

Anyway, been reading a bit of information on the upcoming release of Windows Mobile 2005 (including the power point presentation microsoft released on their German web site) and have come to the conclusion that this OS really doesn't add much in terms of functionality to the hx4700 (which I have been convinced to buy simply though the reading i've dont on this site ) even if a rom upgrade was available

... I was just wondering what other members on this forum had an opinion on it? (i've also read the thread here: http://www.ipaqhq.com/forums/archive...p/t-13540.html)

Plus I figured HP wont be releasing an upgraded ROM for this iPaq (retail price has been dropping steadily where I live - down 20% in the few months it has been out and also, the hx47xx series can easily be extended by HP eg more RAM, swap over to NAND for programs needing to be loaded in RAM etc etc, so a refresher model might be around the corner - pure speculation on my part though).

Anyway, what i'm getting at with all this is what are people's thoughts regarding Windows Mobile 2005 from the limited information there is on the net (btw i'll add that Feb 16 was MS's ETA on the internal beta of WM2k5 with a release date of April),

And whether or not it's worth getting an hx4700 at this point in time (which i'm itching to do, but don't want to do something I might bash my head over in four or five weeks time, if MS sticks to their release schedule )

(btw i'll be using the PDA for using reference software, MP3s and movies, with the occasional moment spent on the net via WiFi)

Any comments, suggestions would be greatly appreciated - and thanks for reading my long winded post

I am assuming (though I could be wrong) that the 4700 will be included for the upgrade as this is the only VGA PDA that HP has, and the fact that it was just released not that long ago. What everybody should do is write, phone, email HP about WM2005 upgrade for the 4700. If they see an overwhelming response, then they will definately find it worthwhile to give the upgrade. I for one, will be pissed if I have to buy a new VGA PDA that offers the new OS after just purchasing the 4700.

PS.--I just emailed them myself, and I would suggest ALL 4700 owners to email them asking them about the WM2005 upgrade which in my opinion will benefit the 4700 tremendously.

Welcome to the site. My opinion is that HP will not update to WM2005. That being said, I've owned at least 12 PDA's that I can remember and the 4705 is the first one that I have really liked and recommend it highly, upgrade or not. Good luck!

Have 'hacked' or modified versions of the wm2003se rom ever appeared for your dell x5? (sorry for the unsavoury nature of this comment, but if im spending over US$650 for a PPC, then i'd be willing to use a modified rom in order to gain functions the PDA should have intrinsically come bundled with - im refering to the hx4700)

Hehe, thanks for the welcome, Todd
Hmmm as tempted as I am by all that i've read to go out and buy one, I might wait another 2 weeks to see what's happening with announcements from MS and HP (regarding a refresher model) my logic being that if MS have an ETA of April for the release of WM2005, and the hx47xx series has a slight chance of being updated (or am I wrong? - im new to all this, how many models have had incremental model updates in the past?) either through the amount of RAM or something else, I might wait just a little bit longer...

I doubt that HP will offer an upgrade. I doubt even more that they care about our emails. There is an online petition asking for a WM2003 SE upgrade to the 4100/4300 series. Last I heard, it had over 14,000 signatures and HP hadn't even acknowledged it.

This is the address that I sent: NACMSupport@hp.com However, I just had a reply back from them saying that they will not upgrade to the new Media Player 10 ????WTF???? I asked the about WM2005, not Media Player 10. I triple read my post, and there is nothing about MediaPlayer 10. Obviously, HP does not hire their staff with an IQ over 50, as they obviously cannot read. Anyways I sent them an email back, and hopefully, I will get the proper response back!

Here is the original post that I sent and the reply that I got back. HP at it's finest:

problem_description : I have just purchased this Pocket PC about 3 months ago. I am very happy with it. I also just heard about the release of WM 2005, which will be happening soon. Can you please tell me if the HX4700 can and will be upgraded to the new OS? I am assuming that this can be done through a ROM upgrade. Can you please email me back with some information as I will be very upset if there will be no upgrade for the new OS with the purchase of the 4700 just a few months prior. I am also the owner o
f a H2210, but I am only concerned for the HX4700 regarding the upgrade as I know that the 2210 is an older model.

Here is the respose from HP's finest that I got back:

Dear HP Customer,

Thank you for contacting HP eServices.

This is with reference to your e-mail regarding HP iPAQ Update for Microsoft?s Windows Media Player 10.

Please note that Update for Microsoft?s Windows Media Player 10 is not currently available for the iPAQ hx4700. It is not possible to upgrade the iPAQ by performing ROM update on it.

Individual Windows Media Player 10 Mobile updates for other existing iPAQs are not scheduled at this time. Unlike the desktop version of Windows Media Player 10, Windows Media Player 10 Mobile cannot be installed over a customer?s existing operating system. Because of digital rights management requirements, customers must do a full operating system, or ROM, upgrade to get Windows Media Player 10 Mobile capabilities. Due to the complexities involved with offering full ROM upgrades for all current HP iPAQs,
HP has chosen to provide this upgrade only for the digital entertainment focused HP iPAQ rx3000 series Mobile Media Companion at this time. In the future, HP will provide Windows Media Player 10 Mobile support on most new HP iPAQ Pocket PCs.

Currently, customers can take advantage of some of the new features in Windows Media Player 10 on the PC with other current HP iPAQs with Windows Media Player 9. They will be able to sync their digital music from Windows Media Player 10 on their PC to an iPAQ with Windows Media Player 9, and they will be able to play that music on their iPAQ as before. What they will not be able to do is use some of the new features in Windows Media Player 10.

Please e-mail us if you need any clarification and we will be glad to assist you.

Thank You,

HP eServices

It certainly can't hurt to wait a few weeks to see what happens. Good luck.

I think that it is probably going to be a little longer than a few weeks as HP has just released their 2XXX series a couple of months ago. I think that they would have waited for the new OS to be released, but then again, you never know
