Turning my iPaq into a Blackberry replacement...
...well, not mine exactly, but the hx4700.

My Dad has a Blackberry unit which belongs to his work, but he really doesn't get along with it. He liked my Mum's hx2210 and wished that the Blackberry was more like that, and recently he saw my hx4700 and is absolutely obsessed with it! Even looking at the new HP GSM units, he can't take to them, hes after the VGA screen mainly. he'd happily shell out his own cash to get the unit as long as he could put the work SIM in it (as all charges are covered, wherever he is in the world).

I've been reading a wee bit for him and gather that you can get a GSM/GPRS compact flash card which would work with the hx4700. So as far as I can ascertain this could be set up to do the same job, that is receive email via the work mail server and allow web browsing.

So, the question for you experts out there, am I correct? Would the CF card adapter allow the mail server (based around a lotus notes system) to be polled every few minutes to check for mail? Could it be used with the SIM card currently occupying the Blackberry?

Thanks in advance!

Yes it is possible to use a GSM CF Card with the hx4700. The problem that I see is the backend mail server. The Blackberry server can work with either Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange systems. Our company for examples uses Blackberry with Lotus Notes. The PPC will not sync with Lotus Notes without some kind of conduit. Over the wire this would be difficult. Activesync on the PPC will sync with Microsoft Exchange servers. Unless someone else knows something I don't I am not sure if it is possible to sync a PPC over GSM to a corporate architecture running Lotus Notes.

Thanks Ted.

I understood that there is some software out there allowing sync to a Lotus Notes server, but as you can gather I have a broad grasp of the subject, rather than intimate knowledge! I think the software is called "Pylon" or something similar, but I guess from your response it may not do what I think it will.

I suspect he'd use Activesync to sync with his home PC, but a different sync software to go with Lotus Notes for the PPC would be used for work purposes, if possible.

Anyone actually acheived this?

Ha Ha,
Just priced Pylon Anywhere. $645! Not sure he's that desperate. £375 for iPaq, £150 for CF card and then ~£450 for the software.

Unless anyone knows of a cheaper solution I think he'll cope as he is!

Pumatech's Intellisynch copes with MS & Lotus Notes & a few other bits & pieces as well. This link will give you the low-down:

LJ50,

I'm not sure whether you are still seeking the information required to enable Hx4700+GSM CF Card to receive BlackBerry emails.

I read some article from Blackberry website which you might be interested:
http://www.blackberry.com/products/l...pocketPC.shtml

As you can see, the BlackBerry is setup as a Mail Service, like ActiveSync. As long as the Mobile Network can support this, in theory, your Dad should be able to get this to work.

However, since ActiveSync mail service and BlackBerry mail service will be 2 different setup, the mail will not be aggregated in one inbox, instead 2 inboxes when "Messaging" is opened.

Be ware.
