Best GPS for Bicyclists?
G'day,

I'd like to be able to use my Ipaq and GPS to track my bicycle rides, bascially use it as a trip meter. I'd like to be able to hit "start" at the begining of my ride and "stop" at the end and be able to read out:

Distance Travelled
Travel Time
Average Speed

I don't want a recording of the route, as a matter of fact most of my riding is done in a newer sub-division that's not on the map yet.

I sent this suggestion to Destinator and they're going to forward it to marketing for further study.

Anyone else interested?

I have a suggestion...don't use a GPS. If that is all the info you need, get a cyclometer. It will be much smaller and mount on your handlebars.

I can even suggest an older model if you can wait til I get home to see which ones I have

memory map and a fortuna clip-on...excellent battery life and the memory-map software is awesome...... mm is expensive though

Also, have a look at GPS Tuner...much cheaper and you can plonk your own maps in when they appear

However, I agree with previous post, you really only need a cycle computer

cheers

If you really want GPS why not go for one of the hand held units available.
I have a Garmin etrex for which a handlebar holder is available and will do all you ask.
Records your track, max speed, average speed, trip time, trip distance, location etc.
If set to power saving mode it will run for 24+ hours on a set of AA batteries (easily replaceable) not something you can do with an iPAQ.

As a keen cyclist I have to go with the idea of a cyclometer - they're cheap, small, weigh next to nothing & (depending on the model) can record & display lots of different statistics.

Thanks all,

Since I travel with my IPAQ any way (use it for MP3) I thought it seemed reasonable to also track my rides but it sounds like the cyclometer may be the way to go.

Harleyxlc - what you got?

Thanks,
Ski

I would side with harley and suggest that you use a cheap and cheerful cycle odometer. They provide all the basic stats you are after - the down side is that you couldn't (as far as I know) upload that information to a computer for analysis. Who knows you might want to perfect your performance over a route in which case a full GPS solution would allow you to see your speeds (or should i be accurate and say velocities) over different parts of your course.
In terms of using a GPS on an bike, I would go for some solution that would be rugged (against knocks and you falling off) and the weather (rain, mud, grit etc). A hx4700 isn't the right tool. I have a Garmin Vista - I would think that it would do everyting you are after. You can even down load various types of maps to it to ensure you can find the pub at the end of your journey.
Hope this helps.

The models I have are rather old and no longer available, but they are both Avocet. I got a higher end one for my road bike and a more rugged version for the mountain bike. I have had several others over the years and really most will do what you want.

I'm afraid I haven't riden in several years, perhaps high end models these days do let you upload to a PC?
