Can't get my Wifi to work! HELP!
I'm a newbie in wireless networking so there might be some useless info included and some important things missing...

When I first got my Hx4700 I couldn't get it to connect, then suddenly it did for a whole day with no special configurations, and then it stopped working again. Now I can't get it to work at all...

I'm using a MR814v2 wireless router from Netgear. I've tried different channels. I use Open (authentication) and Disabled (Data Encryption) on both PDA and router. 802.1x network access control box unchecked. Tried both Internet and Work. Followed all the basics setup instructions I've found on the web.

The router gets an IP dynamically from the ISP. The PC connected with a cable to the router works fine. "Enable wireless access point" and "Allow Broadcast of Name (SSID)" are both checked on the router page. The IP of the router is 192.168.0.1.

The Wifi Graph program shows a very good signal strength. The problem seems to be that I don't get an IP adress from the router. What can I do to get one? When I turn on Wifi it finds my SSID and it says "Available". I try to connect and it says "Connecting" but nothing happens and then it goes back to "Available" again. Two other SSID's turn up everynow and then and makes my SSID "Unavailable". I can connect to these and get the green button but when I try the same with my own router it stays amber.

Can anyone help me? I have a couple of Wifi programs installed so I can check things and get more info if needed.

Regards,
Pontus, Sweden

take the ip of your 4700.. put that ip in the dmz zone of your router.. then try to connect. make sure that you do not have wep enable on either unit for now. also
check to see what channel your router is broadcasting on.. it should be set to auto or seek..if that choice is available. I would do this if nothing works...do a hard reset to the router.. then try agian to connect.. if that does not work.. look at the routers makers website for a firmware upgrade.. there have been some netgears that needed a firmware upgrade before they would connnect...

My IP on the 4700 is 0.0.0.0... What IP do you mean? You mean I should put the MAC adress somewhere? But I've unchecked the Wireless Card Access List box in the router, so there's no restriction/filtering. And I can't put a MAC in DMZ can I? The router IP is 192.168.0.1. WAN setup is configured to connect automatically, but I can choose a default DMZ server (192.168.0.0). That's the only place in the router manager page I see DMZ mentioned. WEP is not enabled. At the moment the router is broadcasting on channel 11, but I've tried different channels without success. I've upgraded the firmware and it seems like that reset the router. I've also tried to unplug the router to restart it.

Do you think the other SSID's I see are interfering? But they both use channel 11, so I should be OK as long as I use channel 1 or 6 right?

Any other ideas? I'm getting desperate here!

It sounds like DHCP isn't working right.

Go to the main SETTINGS screen, select the CONNECTIONS tab, and tap NETWORK CARDS. Tap the NETWORK ADAPTORS tab and tap "HP iPAQ Wi-Fi Wireless Adaptor" to open the next screen. Verify that "Use server-assigned IP address" is selected. Select OK, close all the screens, and do a soft reset.

Also, make certain DHCP is turned on in your router!

Under the Ethernet Driver there's no IP adress. Under Wifi Wireless Adapter, below "Use specific IP adress" it says "IP adress: fe80::211:85ff:fec5"

In Self Test it says IP adress: 127.0.0.1 (EDIT: before it was 0.0.0.0)

The problem seems to be I don't get an IP adress from the router (functioning as a DHCP server) but I don't know why.

Driver issue with the hx4700? Bad hardware? Incompatible router?

"Use server-assigned IP address" is selected. The box in the router page that says "Use Router as DHCP Server" is checked. (Starting IP: 192.168.0.2 Ending IP: 192.168.0.51)

The iPaq will have an IP only when it is given one, either by a DHCP server or by entering a static IP.

zefix,
I would try resetting the router (there's a reset button, probably on the back that needs to be depressed for 10+ seconds). Then, go into the router's setup utility and provide a new SSID (network name), then enable wireless on the iPaq and see if it will associate and connect.

After that, you should probably get back into the router's utility and set up MAC filtering and WEP or WPA security.

You might find some more help from the WiFi Guide linked from my signature (even though it was written primarily for the Dell handhelds, many of the details re the same).

I reset the router but still it won't associate... Provided a new SSID and it shows up on the iPAQ but I still can't get an association/IP adress. I also tried a static IP in the iPAQ, but it didn't work any better. I'll read your guide!

I was using DHCP in the router but can't get an IP adress. That is the main problem. But I've also tried with a static adress and soft/hard reset on both device and router, so it's not just a DHCP problem. I can see the access point in the list but I don't get prompted to connect. I do however get prompted to connect to other SSID's in the area...

Try it with the Ipaq plugged into a power supply, there is a power saving feature that may be causing it to fail

Just for the heck of it: if the router is showing the device as having been assigned an IP address, change the setting on the devide to "use specific IP address" and enter the IP address shown on the router manually. Enter the subnet mask as 255.255.255.0 and enter the routers IP address as the default gateway -- this last is typically 192.168.0.1 but check the router to make sure.

If the router is NOT showing the device, do everything above but enter an IP address like 192.168.0.20 (or for the last section, and address that is NOT in use already.

Close all the pages and soft-reset. Good luck!

Tyr this:

Click on Start -> Settings -> Connections -> Settings.

You will have My ISP and probably "my Work Network" (it may be called something else". Click on "Set up my proxy server" and make sure it is all blanked off.

Or post here what you find in this area.

Why do I suggest this ? because this is where I have had exactly the same issues and found a solution.

Hi All,
I am a new Ipaq 4700 owner. It is my first Palm PC. I am having the same type of WiFi problem with my unit. When I checked with the 'Self Test' it shows no asociation of the IP to the SSIDI even though I typed in all the data. The DHCP is disabled. I would be interested in the solution that 'alan sh' has found.
