hx4700 screen and stylus issue
Firstly, it is great to have found this forum.

I bought the hx4700 in Australia over a month ago and took it traveling. My partner and I used it to document our trip and we managed to type, using the stylus and onboard keyboard, a document over 150kb.

The result of this is that we have a great journal but the screen is permanently marked with dots especially on the vowels and other functions that we used allot. The stylus seemed smooth at its tip but obviously its not.

On return to Oz I asked a few shops that sell the 4700 if they have heard of this problem before. None of them had?

I could not believe that a screen built for touching and tapping on would only last for 150kb. So, I called Hp Australia to see if they could replace my screen and stylus under the warranty. They do, and I wait the return of my 4700. Lets see???

Has any body had this problem? I have read in these forums that a screen protector is the way to go. If so, what brand in Australia would be recommended?

I have nmot heard of that problem. But it seems most people use screen protectors, including myself. My roommate has a "naked" ipaq and has never had such issues.

Hello, Mungo

I'm in Sydney, but got my screen protectors from Boxwave (the boxwave ClearTouch Crystals) located in the US. These are beaut, as you may infer from the positive feedback people have posted on these on the forum. The cost, including delivery, was AU$50 for 3, and each lasts for months and months (some people have reported up to 6 months!). They are washable and provide a responsive surface for the stylus to write on. I also had them delivered in 4 days, so I didn't need to wait long

The website is www.boxwave.com, and they accept VISA.

I also got my screen protectors from Boxwave. They have fast delivery and reasonable postage. I'm in rural Victoria.

hello, Yes, the stylus is plastic, and it will leave marks on the screen, they are more like smudges as they are not actually scratches on the screen, but plastic marks that smear off of the stylus tip.. they can be removed, I use a soft "felt" material, and rub it gently in many directions on the spot for a few moments..gradually the spot will dissapear.. it is not easy to get them off... and YOU MUST CLEAN YOUR SCREEN WITH WINDOW CLEANER WELL AFTERWARDS.. OR THE SCREEN PROTECTORS WILL NOT STICK.

Thanks all for you replies,

I will look into the screen protectors from boxwave.

However, the saga continues. I have been advised that I will have to pay for the repair of the screen as the technicians say and I quote “it is user damage through constant usage of the stylus tip against the screen” . How absolutely absurd is that statement considering the stylus is the tool instructed by the manual to be used to tap on the screen. I should also mention that the document I tapped into my iPAQ was only 158kb. That is hardly a large amount of typing. I am sure many of you have tapped more than that in your own devices and never experienced the same kind of permanent marking as I have.

The fact of the matter is the stylus was faulty, the screen is damaged because of it and I refused to pay for it to be fixed.

I was happy with my iPAQ but I am starting to wonder if my money was wasted on buying a product from HP.

Seriously, has anybody herd of such nonsense???

you should have taken them to task right then on the user manual issue and its instructions to use the stylus on the screen directly...and refused to end the call untill you spoke with the on duty call manager. the 4700's screen is very "soft" and it is especially wiggly in the very center.. almost like there is no support under that area..but im sure there is in some fashion...else we would all have holes there.. but..the stylus DOES smudge off onto the screen.. and it looks like terrible scratches, but its not..its just plastic embedded in the porus surface of the screen...and it can be removed with work. im not so sure this stylus is really the right one for this screens hardness level, actually a hi polished hard oak tip would be the best solution, it wouldnt wear, and it couldnt possible scratch the screen, no leave marks i think.. but yes..its ABSURD TO SAY USE IT..AND WHEN IT CAUSES PROBLEMS..BLAME IT ON YOU. HONESTLY..I THINK IF YOU TALKED TO A PRODUCT LIBALITY ATTORNEY ON THIS,YOU MIGHT HAVE A CASE AGIANST HP FOR THIS.. AND I AGREE.. ITS BS AND THEY NEED TO BE STRAIGHTENED OUT ON IT...THEY SHOULD HAVE MADE IT RIGHT WITH YOU...
