Try the self test.
start/settings/system/self test
Make sure the volume on and up loud enough to hear
tap volume button, move slider, dot in on box
If you have headphones try them

All basic stuff, but you only wrote that you had "restart device".. does that mean soft reset of hard rest. Also what programs do you have loaded other that what came with the ipaq that have audio capabilities?

First, make sure that your speakers are on and not turned off. Second, do a hard reset which basically will erase everything but what is in Rom, and then load everything back in again from scratch, don't use a backup. Hopefully, that will solve any problem.

Its worth a try to do a hard reset, without loading any software, then try sound and self test as before, but if self test fails on sound again your unit needs repair. Sorry for the bad news

Nah, if he did, then he would still have sound while using headphones. Doing that just kills the external sound (Yes, I've done it)

Had similar problem. Speaker would fail and restart again for no reason several times. Luckily CDW replaced the hx4705. We will see how long it lasts this time. Pathetic for a $600 device. Perusing the various forums (here, HP, PPC) it appears that the hx4705 indeed has a significant hardware speaker failure rate, reportedly usually requiring replacement of the motherboard.
