Activesync + WiFi = No auto wake up
With Activesync configured for syncing every 30 minutes with our Exchange Server via WiFi, my co-workers are able to leave their wireless turned on and then turn off the device and it will wake up, sync, and turn off every 30 minutes. This is with a Ipaq 4150.

On my 4700, setup the exact same way, my device will not wake up enough to connect via WiFi and sync. It does appear to attempt to sync while asleep but it never wakes up enough to turn on the WiFi and always results in an error telling me to check my connection.

Anyone else tried Activsync via WiFi on a schedule? To me this appears to be a bug with the 4700 as it works great with the 4150.

Thank you!

Edit: Per the log file, here is the error:
Unable to connect. Verify your dialup or proxy settings are correct, and try again.
Error code: CONNMGR_36

it would appear you are correct...mine does same thing.. i would ask a couple of questions.
1. are the versions of sync different on the 2 units ?
2. do you have a firewall, antivirus running on the 4700 and not the other one ?
3. disable docware and or hp tools protect if on..

Here is a idea.. leave the 4700 in the cradle, and dont turn it off..let it just powerdown the screen after a bit, then see if it does sync next time..as i think you say its doing this while completely turnd off... ( for u.s.b charging i assume)
let us know.. interesting problem..

emtownsend, are you syncing over Wifi through your ActiveSync computer, or are you syncing directly to the Exchange Server?

I get the exact same error on my hx4700, but I know I had it working once before...grrr...

I get your error when my wireless card is set to use "My Work Network", but when I set it to use "My ISP" then it just doesn't connect - no errors...

I have the WiFi set for "The Internet" to avoid any VPN issues.
I am syncing over WiFi via Activsync to my Exchange Server 2003 which does work when I sync manually; I just cannot get it to auto sync at timed intervals.

Figured out how to turn off Dockware too. Have to hold the stylus while it is on and deselected "Turn on Automatically". Tapping of course just clears the screen...

Hmmm, ok changed my WiFi back to "The Internet"...now if you click the icon at the top on your Today Screen, and then Settings/ Advanced, and then click "Select Networks", what do you have those two set to? Both of mine are set to "My Work Network" and when I try to sync manually or automatically, it just starts, then stops a second or two later...if I change the top one to "My ISP" then I get the error you mentioned in your first post...

It's driving me nuts now...LOL

Mine are both set for "My Work Network". Check to see if you have any information entered by choosing "Edit". I do not have anything (modems or ISPs) listed. BUT, I did change mine to "My ISP" to match my co-workers. Mabye this is it? We'll see.

Well, thought I'd figured it out - I looked on the notebook ActiveSync - I hadn't checked off the box to allow Remote access to the notebook, but it's still not syncing...

Anyone?

Yeah, doesn't appear to be working with Docware off and the Advanced settings on either "My Work Network" or "My ISP". Man, I guess I will have to break down and contact HP. Wish me luck!

Ok well found my connecting problem - didn't have "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" enabled on the notebook (must have defaulted when I wiped system a while back).

NOW I can try and get the auto-syncing working on the schedule...I'm wondering if the issue there is the 4700's WiFi takes too long to wake up?

Me too. I am using WPA-PSK with TKIP and that does seem to connect faster than standard WEP. The only caveat is, my co-worker's iPaq 4150 works just fine with WiFi and activesync on mobile schedule. I compared my settings to his and they are both the same. I think the ROM in the HX4700 is due (overdue) for an update. I would suspect that not many people have used this feature until now because Exchange Server 2003 now has this functionality built in.

I did contact HP & they had me make sure the "Use mobile schedule to sync with this PC" and "Sync with this PC during manual sync" check boxes were cleared, and under OPTIONS that the "Enable PC sync using this connection" was checked and the "Maintain connection" radio button was selected. I waited the requisit 5 min and no sync... Nothing still.
I will contact them again...

You know, thinking about whether or not the WiFi is taking too long, I don't think it is even trying at all. When my co-worker's 4150 does a mobile sync, his WiFi light comes on and his screen briefly comes on without the backlight, then it all goes back off again when finished...

Also, if I leave my device on for 5 min, the mobile sync does work. This has something to do with the HX4700's ability to wake up properly.... I also have reminder issues with it not waking up.

My 4700 is on ROM 1.00... Any of the newer devices have a newer ROM? I got my 4700 a couple weeks after its initial release.

Raiderhp4700, is this for sure? I wonder how this can do with Activesync? Is that the program that pulls it out of sleep mode?

Going to HP was useless... They ran me in circles and then told me:
Quote:
I would like to keep you informed that the iPAQ is out of 90 days software warranty. I will only assist you with basic troubleshooting.
I asked them if there was a way that we, the consumer, can contact HP about this non-waking-up issue and I was told,
Quote:
Please call 800-HPINVENT (800-474-6836). They will assist you further.
One thing I must say about HP and Microsoft... Once you buy the product you MUST be able to find solutions yourself and/or just not use the "features" they have given you...They really are too big to care.

I will call that number but I am willing to bet they cannot/will not help me. Now I am stuck with a pretty significant feature that does not work... What to do?

Also, I am not convinced that this is an ActiveSync issue as my co-worker's 4150 works just fine in the same environment and the same settings, just not with Windows Mobile 2003. He has 2002. Unless it is the ActiveSync on his device that you are referring too and then it is an HP problem, not Microsoft... I dunno....
