Anyone here have experience with the Socket SDIO In-Hand Scan?
It's found here and we have a customer here at work asking about these for their many hx4700's...

Anyone have any experience with it? Can't be the best scanner...I usually try to get people go more rugged when they want to start scanning because they start to get a lot of use then and are more prone to drops, etc.

Thanks

I have the Socket CF Class 1 In Hand scanner that I use with the hx4700 in DaimlerChrysler assembly plants and various tier one automotive facilities. I use the scanner around 200 times a week with various databases I create in Handbase to export to Excel.

I have been totally amazed by what this scanner has been able to read. I have scanned 3 of 9 barcodes where a vertical bar was so faint due to an anomaly during printing (or 95% of it is missing) that you would almost a magnifying glass to see it and this scanner picked it up repeatedly and reliably. I have tried Symbol and Intermec scanners ($2000 +) in the plants that could not read these labels. This includes new "out of the box" barcode scanners in the plants as well. It even out performs some raster scanners. I can't even count the number of times this scanner has saved me from a product issue after the customer sees this "little cheap scanner" outperfom their equipment that is over 10 times its size and 4 times the cost.

The drain on my hx4700 extended battery is minimal. The scanner is stored in a leather case surrounded by foam when not in use. So I cannot say how reliable it would be if it was used say... 20,000 times a week and not kept clean. Other than that I would highly recommend it.

we have one of these at university...we use for inventory checks as all our new PCs etc. come with barcode stickers on. Makes the process a breeze, we just scan the numbers into a simple excel spreadsheet. It manages to scan from a good few feet away from the barcode and can deal with some of the ones that have started to peel...

they seem fairly rugged to me...its main use is in a 2210, but it also works in the 4700

This is a bit off subject, however closely related. Does anyone know of a program that will define barcodes as text phrases? IOW, if I scan a barcode into a text docuemnt it will print a word, phrase, sentence or paragraph defined for that barcode.
Thanks.
