Less than a week old and my backup battery is dead already?
...Surely this can't be!

The Li-ion battery charges fine to 100% but NiMH is a constant 0%

Not exactly what I was expecting from a week old machine!

I've contacted HP live support and they went through the standard predictable procedure which involved hard resetting my device

Anything obvious I may be overlooking before I test the HP warranty?

Cheers

Aloysius.

Sorry, no advice on that. My first 4705 had backup battery AND main battery issues. In mine the main battery lock switch slid out of locked very easily and frequently causing my device to be, essentially, batteryless and the backup battery while it said 100% would instantly die when this happened. This made the machine hard reset every time the lock switch moved. It was annoying and I wound up taking the unit back for an exchange.

Personally my experiences with HP support and warraty issues left me wanting to avoid any and all contact with HP in the future. So I took my unit back to CompUSA and used my ExpressExchange warranty to get a replacement on the spot. I suggest avoiding HP support as they really do suck. You'll wind up sending your unit back and forth with them and they *may* eventually replace your unit, but most likely with a refurb one (i.e. someone else's problem). HP Refurbs are basically returned units that HP charges up and if it powers on after 8 hours of charging they label it refurb and send it out to some other unsuspecting user.

If you have the option of returing the unit for an exchange I would go that route. Less headaches and you'll probably actually get a NEW replacement unit. Good luck!

Try turning off the unit and charging overnight, see if it gets to 100%. I believe there is an issue on some units draining the backup battery. If that's the case, exchange it.

sorry to hear your 4700 is sick.. first.. are you sure you have a dead backup..or just improperly working firmware... start a program..any program.. then close the program by using the X , then remove the main battery for 10 min, reinstall it.. go to your running programs list... is that program still there..? if so your backup is working.. if not..its well...dead.. the point of this is that your backup battery is supposed to protect what you have in ram.. if its not working.. its going to dump that program you opened from the list.
if the pgm is still there... you have a charging system firmware issue..its not doing its job and reporting to the charge gauge.... time for a reflash at hp.. if the reflash doesnt fix it.. they will have to replace it... and of course if your backup is actually dead..they need to fix that too... IT MAY BE THAT THE BATTERY ITSELF IS INSTALLED BACKWARDS..OR NOT EVEN THERE... OR JUST BAD..
ive not opened mine up... yet..been meaning to do it..( yea i know it voids the warranty) but for the grief everyone here gets from hp.. id just as soon buy another one now that prices are down some.. and keep the xtra one for parts.. rather than
have to pay hp now..or later.. YOU DO KNOW WHY HP SUPPORT SUCKS SO BADLY DONT YOU ? ITS BECAUSE YOUR NOT TALKING TO HP..YOUR TALKING TO THEIR SUB-CONTRACTED SUPPORT GROUP AT MCI, YES.. MCI... MCI IS/HAS BEEN COMPAQ TECH SUPPORT FOR YEARS ...NOW THEY ARE HP SUPPORT AS WELL... I LEFT THE SUPPORT GROUP BECAUSE THEY WERE SO PATHETICALLY MANAGED AND PREFORMED... I FELT SORRY FOR THE CUSTOMERS...
