I use HP Protect Tools to secure my device.
Access to the device can only be gained by typing in the password/PIN at start-up (survives a hard restore) so basically the device is useless to anyone other than me, without knowing the password.
It can also be used to encrypt folders on the device so information stored on SD/CF cards can be secured so that even if they are removed from the device the data is still secure.
It can also be configured to close running applications and lock the device after a set period of time. I have mine set for 3 minutes, which means that 3 minutes after I power off the HP Protect Tools will stop any running applications, lock the device and encrypt the selected folders.
You need to have the device set to shut down after a pre-determined period of activity as this action wakes the device up and displays the login screen.
Once you get used to the device coming back on again after you have powered off then it is a great way of keeping it secure.
Sequence:
1) Power on
2) Enter password at login screen
3) Un-encrypts folders
4) Use device
5) Power off
6) Pre-set time period (i.e. 3 minutes)
7) HP Protect Tools powers device on, locks the device and displays login screen, stops running applications and encrypts folders,
8) Device powers off after pre-set period of inactivity (you need to set this for both battery and powered as it will not power off again if it is in the cradle unless the time out is set for both)
Hope this all makes sense
