If you can find a vendor to sell you the chip, and if you have the tools and skills to replace smd components, along with the willingness to potentionally end up rendering your $600 plus investment worthless - - go for it

Hi twenty8andtwo. There is a thread here on the forum that talks about the chip and pin set on the 128MB chip. Apparently, the chip is hard soldered onto the board and is not something the lay person can just pop out and pop in themselves. I would think if you had the skills and special tools you could easily find the chip. Otherwise, PocketPCTechs is the way to go (or wait a little longer and replace your device when a newer model comes out).

I have read that bit if info from them...that they have to do a smd R&R , ( it can be done at home with a microscope, microtip quality soldering station, flux, wick, ect.)
and the previous skills at doing this.. its not a job for the novice or even slightly expereinced, but i also read that this chip comes in socket mount , so.. i dont know who is telling the truth here... SO TONIGHT.. I AM GOING TO OPEN MY 4700 AND LOOK AT IT TO SEE..which it is.. ive been meaning to do this.. now is as good a time as any. so much for whats left of the factory warranty.. now.. it may ( depending on room available ) to remove the original chip, add a socket, and then plug in a new memory ic.. ill just have to look.. this will also provide me with the chip id... I do know that it is an odd and somewhat unique type of memory chip.. a radac or something like that..i forget.. but tonight will provide many answers. raider.

Anyone know specifically why HP did not put 128MB RAM, other than being costly?

some people with far too much time on their hands have come to the conclusion (by themselves ofcourse) that the 64Mb is a deliberate ploy from HP so we all rush out and buy wm2005 which as I understand uses the memory much better.

not sure exactly how its different/ better, maybe somebody could explain??

WM2005 is going to be the ideal OS for PPC's because of the memory management. Right now, all programs installed into main memory is shared with all running programs. In WM2005, ALL installed programs in main memory will be installed into ROM and not into random memory which is where it should be! If your machine has 64mb of RAM, then it will be entirely used for running programs ONLY! The 4700 would be an ideal candidate for WM2005 as it has 128mb ROM and only 64mb RAM, but I highly doubt that HP will offer the upgrade.

Oh i see. That marketing for ya. Make something really kool, then make it a little worse than intende sell, then release a better one. Just like the gameboys...except the DS . It sure would be nice to get WN2005. But the chances are very slim.

the problem with 2003 and memory usage is memory leak, when a program starts and runs.. it takes memory, when you close the program, you dont get it all back, there are drivers and dll's loaded in upper ram, holding on to usable memory, in 2005 this problem has been corrected by the fact that all dlls and drivers are already loaded in rom, and running applications take place in ram.. where before they loaded both to ram.. the tru question is.. if one gets ones hands on 2005... will 2003 allow an upgrade on top of it...as pc windows does.. it may not.. and you could end up with two windows instead of one...scary thought for now...

I just don't understand. 64Mb and 128Mb of memory is just too lame! You can get 1Gb mini SD cards - why won't HP put more memory onboard? I'd pay a bit more for that feature!

If all the dll's are already loaded in the ROM in wm2005 would we expect a performance increase when opening programs over wm2003se !!

Thats a scary though all right, but surely not even M$ are that dense
I would have expect them to issue a new ROM image as aposed to upgrading wm2003se !!! clean slate with no wn2003se bagage
