newbie touch screen question.
Hi. first up, this is my first post so hello all.

I have a bit of a 'newbie' question.
I don't have a PDA yet but i'm thinking about getting the HX4700.

My question is: is the 'touch' screen designed to work by just touching with your finger or are you supposed to you the stylus?

I know that for a lot of things you would need a stylus as fingers may be too big. The reason I ask is that I would be using the PDA as an in car navigation system and it would be better to use a 'finger touch screen' to operate it rather than the stylus in that situation (like the tom tom go stand alone GPS system).

I know you can operate it with your finger on the screen (as opposed to the touch pad) but is it designed for this use or is only working because it uses a stylus.

Does my ramblings make any sense!?

Thanks for any help.

Hi, Lorax, & welcome to the forum!

In answer to your question, the 4700's touch screen works just like any other, in that it will recognise pressure regardless of what causes the pressure - so you can use a stylus, your finger, a broom handle, anything you like.

BUT...

You need to bear in mind that the whole of the area being touched by your finger registers as a 'hit' so if you need to touch a small & specific part of your screen then you're better off using a stylus.

To be honest, I quite often use my finger to operate my PPC - usually when I'm too lazy to pick up the stylus! - & generally I have no problems. but when I'm doing more intricate stuff, such as scrawling notes, then I have to use a stylus.

Your best bet is to try & get some screen shots of the software you're going to be using & see from them if finger-touching is feasible.

A wise word to you - whatever you decide to use to touch the screen, invest in a screen protector!

Thanks cube. That great. I guess the technology has moved on a bit since my first PDA. I had a Palm V (or something like that) and it only seemed to work with the stylus.
