What would you get today?
Hello.

I'm thinking about getting a HX4700. I understand that it is over a year old now ( I could be wrong).

If you guys and girls were to buy a PDA today would you still get the HX4700 or is there any newer/better models around?

I would buy the hx4705 again for two reasons, the screen and the battery. I tried the Axim x50v and for my needs it didn't compare. I've owned 20 pda's and this is the longest I've had one, it's the best out there right now.

I've only had my HX4700 since last Xmas but I'd (get my wife to) buy it again. There may be newer models out there but as far as my needs go the HX4700 still rules

I would wait for these reasons-- WM2005 is just around the corner. If (I doubt it) HP will give a ROM update, then buy it, if not, then buy it's replacement with WM2005. If WM2005 is not important to you, then when its replacement comes out, the price of the 4700 will drop considerably, and you can buy it then. I would wait at least a couple more months.

As Abb1 almost says - how urgent is your need for a PDA? also have you had one before?

I am assuming that you haven't had one before:

If you must have a brand new one 'now' then I think it is between the 47xx and the Axim x50v - as both have VGA screens and two memory slots - these are the two top of therange models from the two largest producers.

If you are only thinking about getting one - but don't want to wait 3 months or so before (I believe) 2005 models will be around - then I would suggest trying to pick up a cheap ipaq1930/ 1940 or ipaq2210 off ebay or similar for you to try out and see what your useage is.

That way when you come to buy the next generation of models you know what you are looking for and the uses you will have for it.

I wouldn't do VGA again unless all the other specs were what I wanted. I want more memory! The 2755 is what I might buy if I was looking for a top of the line model.

If you are going the VGA route, then you may want to consider the loox 720. It has 128MB of ram which the hx4700 lacks. It also has a camera, and normal dpad for control. It can be purchased through expansys.com for slightly less money than the hx4700. Oh yeah, and it has USB host.

If you don't need VGA, then the hx2XXX line are probably the best of the newer PocketPCs.

Seriously, WM2005 is over rated. You can gain all of its added functionality through 3rd party apps. Perhaps management of memory will be slightly better.

meh.

Thanks chaps.

Some useful points and something to think about.

I think waiting for a few months is a good idea especially since I cant really afford to spend the £600 just yet for the pda and all the extra bits and bobs i want (tom tom GPS, car mount, CF/SD cards, etc).

I'm not sure if WM2005 is important to me since I know nothing about it, but I do like to have the latest version of something if i'm spending a few 100 quid.

I do like the look of the current HX4700 though. The new models might be different and also a lot more expensive!

Also waiting a few months is frustrating when you want to play with a new toy Hmm now i wish you hadn't told me that new versions are around the corner!

Rob3103, I have had a PDA before but it was a palm V (or something like that) so it probably doesn't count.

I've just been taking a look at the 2750 (2755) a that has thrown a small spanner in my decisions!

The larger memory seem a good idea. But i think i prefer the look (and screen size) of the 4700. I guess the VGA would be good too as I'm into photography/filmmaking so it could prove useful.

Anyway, just thinking aloud.

This is probably a dumb question but can you run programs/applications form the CF/SD cards or do they have to be loaded into the rom/ram?

Yes, you can run apps from CF, SD or the built-in filestore. There may be an exception now and then, but generally yes.

The only draw back I see of the 4700 is the RAM only 64MB. Would be nice with 128MB RAM. Battery is not an issue for me, since I have the EXT battery. it last forever.

In that case what is the big deal with only having 64mb instead of 128mb?

Is it all about how many apps you can run at once? Or how fast the apps run? I would have thought the hx4700 is quite fast with that processor.
