Is Printing reliable on HX4700?
I have HP Mobile Printing 4 from the HP support downlad file installed on my 4700 and it worked when I configured it and I have used it occassionally, but it's performance is very unreliable. Lately I haven't been able to printing more often than I can. I have a similar configuration on my wife's ipaq 3115 and it prints all the time. The printers are shared printers on my desktop system shared through my wireless network. The hx4700 connects to the network, can sync through the wifi, surf the internet, access email everything except print all the time.

Is this a common problem with the hx4700?

Just from personal experience, I find that I experience what you are experiencing when I try to print directly from the software I am using. If I save the document, open up HP Mobile Printing, and am on the wifi network, I have no problems printing. Weird.

My story for what is worth. I consider the ability to print while mobile quite important. I also print via WiFi and wired lan to my network shared printers when at home using HP mobile printing version 4.00.00.003-latest for WM2003SE on an hx4700. I also print via BT to my HP 450wbt printer. Even though I have a number of IR printers available it is not used because of the need to point my iPAQ "directly" at the printers and an ocassional bit or garbled data. I also use Repligo which prints directly to com 8, IR, or HP mobile printing, and Time sheets software which has the same abilities to print. Time sheets has a version of PrintPocketCE embeddded for printing. In order for me to print reliably I have found that I need to have as much ram available as possible. In particular when printing large files. If not printing fails with either a 3017 or 5017 error. Ocassionally I get an errror via WiFi and I need to connect/map the network computer before attempting a print job. Or when using BT the radio will fail to turn on due to limited ram, which requires a soft reset. I have tried the Clearvuw suite of products including Jetcet print software, all of which do not perform to my expectations. I continue to try every availbe SW product for printing until I get this completly resolved to my satisfacction. Until them my conclusion is printing is not reliable, unless you live with the "work arounds".

Stay tuned, I will post more when information becomes available.

Thanks, I get the same errors. I seem to be able to print maybe one item per day. I haven't determined a pattern yet though. Maybe the upcoming update will fix this?!

I have an HP 2550n printer installed on ethernet (rather than plugging it into a desktop). I could not get reliable prints to go through from my iPAQ 4700 until I defined it as a Postscript printer in Print Manager.

For whatever reason, it now works perfectly -- I can print from my 4700 to the 2550n without any problems.

I've attempted to configure my hx4700 and 3115 for printing directly to my network print servers but my PPC's don't seem to have any way of communicating with the print servers. I was told it's because PPC doesn't have a resident print engine. I wish this was simpler, seems that printing would be a fundamental must have feature for a PPC. I guess it isn't.

Assuming that you have access to your printer via 802.11b, then the application HP MOBILE PRINTING is what you need to configure.

On the TOOLS tab, under CONFIGURATION, I have my HP2550n printer set up as Manufacturer = HP, Model = Postscript printer, address = 192.168.0.4:9100, and it is set as my default printer.

The IP address for your printer may be different, but try using the above settings as a template. Good luck!

How would I configure HP Mobile Printing? When I try to launch HP Mobile Printing, I get an HTML page saying that with the new version of this software, everything is done automatically or something like that. Would I configure in Print Manager? I have tried setting the IP address in Print Manager but I haven't been successful yet. I haven't tried the Postscript setting yet though.

Just took a look at my 4700. Apparently it was shipped with version 2, when I went to http://www.hp.com/go/pocketpcprint I was able to download version 4, which gave me the same message as you got. So I apparently had the earlier verion in ROM, which I had never updated as it worked. Sorry about the confusion.

BUT ... when I start Print Manager in Programs, I get the same screen as the old version. Selecting Tool, Print Config, then my printer and select Modify, I get the same screen as I mentioned before.

And the "Print Test Page" buton works. It took a minute for the page to print, but it DID print. I can print from other apps, too.

Do you have port 9100 in your IP address? If not, you probably should include it and try again.

Now we're on the same page, thanks for the response. Yes I put the IP address in and it seems that Print Manager puts the :9100 in itself. Still no printing though directly to my print servers. Must be that the Network USB print server works differently than the HP network printer you have. The only way I have been able to print is to print to a shared printer on my main computer connecting through the wifi network.

Still have a problem that the iPaq r3115 prints more reliably than the iPaq HX4700.
