OK here's thedeal. Whilst driving back from Swansea Monday morning I got stuck in traffic so decided to check my mail. I switched from TomTom to the mail client and the screen threw a wobbly. Some of the pixels were still showing TomTom. When I changed apps again more portions of the screen changed but there were still some stray pixels about. Then the screen died completely.
A soft reset didn't work and the unit wouldn't turn on at all. Soft reset again and you can see the screen lights up but it was displaying nothing. Again if I turned the unit off, it wouldn't turn back on again unless I did a soft reset, still with a dodgy screen. So I did a hard reset (didn't need TomTom by then as I knew where I was going) and it still didn't work properly.
Only thing I could think of was that my unit is mounted in front of the cars heater vent but it wasn't on particularly hot.
By the end of the evening the unit seemed to get better and was working fine this morniing. I re-installed all my apps and have used it again today without any issues. Until about an hour ago when the screen was showing the same problem with pixels not updating on the screen. The iPaq has just been sitting in it's craddle in my living room so no extreme temperatures or anything else that's odd.
Is this a known or common problem? And what would the next step be? Back to the supplier or get in direct cvontact with HP?
Just got it turned back on again and it's showing a warning that the backup battery is at 0%. Not sure how that happened as it was at 100% the other day and the unit was only purchased in January so it's not that old. not sure if this is anything to do with my main problem or not.

When your device was in the cardle did you have it configured for USB charging?
If you've had it on charge and the backup battery is still showing 0% then it sounds like a hardware issue.
Try plugging it directly into the charger and make sure the connector is correctly inserted.
Then see if the backup will hold it's charge or not.
Yep, it's set to USB slow charge when in the craddle. The strange thing now is that the Backup Battery has slowly worked it's way back up to 100% whilst I've been using the iPaq, not on charge.
Thik I've got some funny hardware gremlins kicking about in here.
Well it's still playing up every now and again. The backu pbattery suddenly drops to 0% and the warning shows. Then it slowly sorts itself out. The screen is still pixelating too. Back to HP it goes

Yep, this sounds like you've been landed with a Monday morning unit to me. How long have you had it. i was just wondering as maybe you could have negotiated a straight replacement from where you bought it, rather than having to wait all that time for HP to fix or replace. I couldn't bare to be without my one all that time!
The 0% backup battery is an issue with some 4700 units. Take it back, the store would be easier than hp. The other issue sure sounds like the heat...but if the problem continued you may have other issues.
I had some stange issues with mines doing a hard reset. So I deside to trace my steps backwards and take of the most recent software which was Pocket Weather and Pocket Watch. since I've done that I've not had any problems.
Orginally i too thoought I had a hardware problem, but now this does not seem to be the past fault.
I have a similar problem, as alluded to by the USB battery charge issue. I have left my 4705 in the cradle, but forgot that I had taken the charger cord off on a trip and hadn't re-attached it. Now, after several days of not using it, my 405 seems to be dead; no response to the on button. What do I have to do to revive it? Replace the battery for sure, but what do I do about the backup battery? Is it still good? How can I tell?
Thanks.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you've left your 4705 in the cradle but without the external power adaptor connected, for a few days . I'll assume your cradle was not connected to your PC, or if it was, your PC was switched off. This would probably mean that you need to charge your 4700 to restore your battery and unfortunately you will have now reverted to a factory reset condition. I don't think you will have to replace the main or backup battery though.

Correct. Actually PC was on, but not connected through Hotsync, if that matters, and power cable to the PC (laptop) came loose, so the barttery on the PC went down and shut off. I thought perhaps the dying battery pulled current from the 4700? When I discovered the dead battery I took it out to the car and plugged it up to the charger, but didn't get a "charging" light, which is what concerned me about the batteries. So, you think it might still be okay? I'll get the charge cord from the suitcase and plug it up tonight. Hopefully you are correct about the batteries.
Thanks.

Well I got in touch with HP and they gave me the usual "try a hard reset" even though I told them I'd already done that. After I gave them more details on my problems they said they'd get it either fixed or replaced so they picked it up by a courier yesterday so hopefully a new replacement will be on it's way.
Just another update. HP collected my iPaq and had it sorted and returned to me within the week. Only thing is they haven't bloody repaired it
They replaced the backup battery but the screen is still having issues. I've been back on to them this morning and I won't be happy with anything less than a full replacement now.

Yep, I'd get it back to them and ask for a replacement. Once you start to lose confidence in a device, only a replacement unit will do. Good Luck and let us know how it goes from here.
