Hard Reset
Hey Everbody, sorry about the basic question .......but

I am going to have to do a hard reset on my Ipaq 4705. Yesterday during a soft reset, while coming back on, it did a "hard reset". I reinstalled everything through activesync but it is acting very slow especially in settings, often getting stuck there. I have a back-up on my SD Card. Can I hard reset and reinstall from my backup card or do I have to add/remove programs from activesync. Thanks again

Hi meck919nj@aol.com. The short answer is yes you can do a hard reset and reinstall from your last backup. The only issue I ever encountered is that if for some reason I had installed an appliation to file store or the SD card AFTER the last backup, then after doing a restore, I din't have icons for those applications and in one case where the application had written some info to the registry during installation, it didn't work properly. I had to delete those apps and reinstall them. This made me a daily backup person.

I believe that restoring a backup is essential a hard reset. It writes your backup over whatever is in the flash. A hard reset just clears the flash and sets it to the default.

So to answer your question, restoring a backup should leave it exactly where it was when you made that backup (except for the file store and any memory cards of course).

Thanks for the reply. I also learned a lot from your "view my Ipaq". Thanks Again.

Thanks for your quick reply...One more question..What happens to the file store, does it stay, or does it need to be reinstalled?

The File Store is part of ROM and is unaffected by hard resets. Nothing needs to be done to it. In that respect it is a great place to store important things.

Found this out last night and was pleasantly surprised. As you say it makes it a great place to store info you really don't want to lose.

I had always thought that the FS was zapped when doing a hard reset. I have most of the non-OS software installed to there, so it was dead easy to reinstall it all (well set up the shortcuts anyway) and probably saved a lot of time and possible errors.
