New member / new hx4705 owner - nothing but good so far!
Hello all,

I'm a new member here and a new hx4705 owner.

I bought a Handspring Visor PalmOS PDA about 5 years ago to see if PDAs were for me. Two weeks later I was wholly dependant on it. Since then I have moved back and forth between PalmOS and PocketPC with a lean towards PalmOS. My firstPocketPC was a HP Jordana 548 - fantastic PDA!! I eventually switched back to PalmOS due to the lack of available software. My last PocketPC, a HP 2215, was not a positive experience. I had intermittent ActiveSync problems and more than a couple of lockups requiring a hard reset. Having just come from a rock stable PalmOS device I got fed up quickly and returned the 2215 after 1 week and replaced it with a Sony HiRes 480x320 color unit (CLIE NX70V). After more than a year and a half of flawless service (not one crash / hard reset) I damaged it and so it was time for a new PDA. CompUSA's 2-year walk-in replacement warranty came in handy as I now had $400 (full purchase price of the Sony unit) to put towards a new PDA. Since Sony isn't offering PDAs in the States any longer and I don't like anything that PalmOne has to offer I turned my attention to the PocketPC PDAs again. Having just come from a unit sporting a beautiful 480x320 screen I wasn't willing to go to a lower resolution display. This pretty well left the HP hx4705 as my only choice. After doing some research I decided to give the hx4705 a go.

So far I'm blown away! I've only had it for a week now but I have put it through it's paces and it hasn't given me any trouble yet. I've loaded just about every compatible demo application I can find. I'll be purchasing a few essential apps over the next week or two. I was happy to to find that there are lots of cool apps for PocketPC now! I had one demo crash the unit but a soft reset resolved the problem. WiFi has worked seamlessly so far (no luck with VPN yet but I haven't really spent any time on the issue). The irda port works well for remote software from across the room - very cool! The screen.... man, the screen is beautiful! I'm a repair technician for a communications company and I've always wanted to carry the HTML service orders that are assigned to me daily on a PDA but the resolution has never been sufficient to make it useful. The hx4705 displays them perfectly in landscape mode - woohoo! The touchpad (in cursor mode) is really cool too! Battery life is exceptional given the proc speed and display. Also, I haven't experienced any issues with ActiveSync this time around.

I'm one happy customer so far!

Hey, welcome to the site.

You're definitely going down the right path by testing the demos and then investing $$$$ in the software you want.

Also have a look @ MyPDA to the left. Should help with some ideas.

It's obvious to me that you can't be using your hx4705 properly, try doing all of this simultaneously: play an MP3 music file, load up a game or 2, start playing a 200mb real player video, connect to your wireless LAN, kick off a Bluetooth active sync connection, check your calendar in pocket informant and while your doing all of this, have another family member constantly pull your SD and CF cards out and back into the slots repeatedly in rapid succession. Now you see how unstable the current build is!!!! Why HP released such an unstable build is beyond me???

OK, maybe it's best not to try this, I've just managed to get some smoke coming out of mine.

OK bhands. Have you tried doing all the things you mentioned on ANY other device without any probelms? Just becuase you have a number of rants going on in a lot of other threads doesn't mean that other's satisfaction with the device is dependent on yours. Courteousy please for the new members.

No, I've not tried it, I just wondered what might happen if one were to try it. However, it was actually meant as a joke rather than actually trying it. I certainly wouldn't recommend actually trying it. Sorry about the 'rants' just got a bit carried away with the lack of ROM UPDATES!!!!!!! I'll be ok, I've taken my tablets and I'm off for my electric-shock therapy now.

Hi bhands. No problem. Be careful. I hear EST is like doing a hard reset. Make sure you do a backup first.

A hard reset sounds great - I could use the rest

Welcome to the site Deaj. I've owned many pda's in the past and purchased the 4705 in November. I've had no issues to date and can say for my needs, it is the best pda out there. With all the talk about ROM upgrades on this site and Aximsite, I'm not sure I would use an upgrade if it were offered. I've had no issues and would be worried about screwing up a good thing.

As for others that have "upgrade envy" because of the three upgrades Dell has been forced to release, it makes make purchase of the 4705 that much sweeter.

Some men in suits visited my home today and said they were from HP. They took me away in the back of their van and it was dark. When I woke up, I had electrodes connected to the side of my head and now I can't really remember much. The only thing that I can say with any degree of certainty is that the hx4700 is the best pocket pc in the history of the universe and does not need any ROM updates for any reason. It is the finest and most stable pocket PC ever and HP are a wonderful, caring company who put customer care first and consumer profit last. I hope this clears up any confusion caused by my previous posts. I really don't know what has come over me lately. Please accept my humble apologies.

Deaj - Welcome to the site and congrats on the new unit. I've only had mine for about a week myself but I have been lovin' every minute of it. I agree with Toddfather and am not so sure I would even attempt a ROM upgrade if it were offered - I've read too many posts over the years of users ending up with "shiny bricks" after attempting ROM upgrades.

As for bhands - I think he got ahold of some bad haggus I am glad to hear he is now attempting to ease his ROM update angst pharmaceutically.
