Non-functioning power button
My battery's fully charged. My hx4705 is recently-hard-resetted...stock ROM software status like from the factory. Everything is otherwise normal, fine, and properly handled. No missing pixels, no bad speaker issues, no bad breath, only this: when turning off the unit, coming back I discover that the power button won't respond to turn the unit back on. I have to hit the reset button. So, I turn off the unit (with the Today screen's power off software button or without it--in the case of just doing a hard reset), come back a minute (or many more) later and the hard button on top doesn't work. HOWEVER, sometime it does! Sometimes it doesn't! Any clues? I've already emailed HP three times already (you can guess the obvious responses).

Hi gandyjs. Welcome to the forum. When you turn off the device with the hardware button (not the software on the Today Screen), are you able to turn the unit back on with the hardware button?

Yes, I can power cycle the unit with the hardware button only. However, given some time (5, 15, 30 minutes?), I then come back to the unit, mash the hardware button...no response. Only a recessed reset button pressing will restore the power. Again, this happens with software fully loaded and not. It almost seems intermittent. BUT! I don't recall this problem happening when the unit is in its powered cradle or hooked up via a USB cable to my main computer. Could it be a batter issue of some kind? You should know that I have the Mugen 4500 mHa extended battery installed as all this is happening. And yes, all tabs and locking switches are firmly where they should be...after all...I DO get power. But I remember this problem happening with the stock/factory battery as well. I just DON'T want to have to ship it to HP. Hopefully someone may have had this problem and have licked it!

I've had this problem about 5 times in the last 6 months, definitely not a frequent as you. You may have to send it back, but first off, make sure the lock switch on the battery is fully secured in the locked position. I find sometimes that is an issue.

Yeah, all the switches and battery locks are secure and where they need to be. In the case of switching the battery's lock/unlock slider, if it's in the UNlocked position the unit simply doesn't get any power. This is not the case. I GET power. In fact, I just reset the unit again. The standard HP screen and status bar went across as always and it booted up to my normal screen with all its installed software. I then powered off the unit with the hardware power button on top. Fine, no problems, it powered off as always. Then a second later I hit that same hardwired power button to turn the unit back on...great it goes on again. I can power cycle the unit on/off back-to-back with no problem using the hard power button. But if I power the unit off, wait a few minutes, then try to mash that same hard-wired power button...it suddenly and inexplicably becomes useless. It will not power on after a certain amount of time if I used the power button on top. Have to reset.

Hi gandyjs. I am stabbing in the dark here. What is the power reading on your backup battery? Is it fully charged/ Or, does it say 0%? Agina, just stabbing. You may have a faulty unit.

100% power readings. Everything reads normal, everthing is set just fine. I just forwarded this forum's link to HP technical support. Hopefully they'll have compassion on me...even though I'm sure they're busy.

Another stab. What software do you have loaded on your Today Screen that allows you to power off from there? Is there any possibility that one of your Today Screen apps is somehow hindering/locking up the ability to turn it back on after your 3-5 minute period?

No, this problem happens whenever there's no software loaded and I don't use any software to power the unit on or off.

HP should be able to do a few tests over the phone and decide whether or not to send you the dreaded FedEx box for return.

swhoutx035,

You were heading down the right path; I was thinking the same thing too that it maybe a 3rd Party app causing weird problems.

Without anything 3rd Party apps loaded I would say it is a problem with the device. However I would also check the iPAQ Backup to see if you have the battery monitor turned on. On some of the older iPAQs the battery monitor caused problems. HP will definately have you hard reset the device and try things out before loading anything to the device; even PIM information. To save time I would try that.

I just tried that advice. The Backup program allowed for a Battery Monitor option...just now saw it for the first time! Turns out it was and has been UNchecked all this time. So, I checked it for the first time and told it to monitor the battery. I then turned off the machine. A second later I turned it back on again...it allows me to do that. But I just now checked the unit after several minutes. Nope...the power button is back to being unresponsive again.

HERE'S A QUESTION: will HP mail me a "mailer" box so that I can properly ship my defective unit to them and then THEY pay for shipping? I trust this is the case.

Yes, if HP suggests to return the device they will overnight you a box to return the device which is then overnighted back to them. There turn around time if pretty quick.
