4705 - Remote Control Question
Hello,
i am on the market for an IPAQ. I also am on the market to purchase a universal remote for my various AV equipment. I have never owned an IPAQ - dropping blackberry service - and am curious if the IRDA port is strong enough to support remote capabilites - if it is weak has anyone had positive experience with the griffin total remote with this model? basically i would like this purchase to function on three ends - the home theatre remote, my business lifeline and fun toy...

I am not bound to the 4705 model - but i like the screen / touchpad/ Bluetooth etc.. Any recomendations given this limited info??

Sorry if this is long winded and thank you for any guidance...

JMS

Welcome to the forums,

Here is a link to the largest remote thread we've had on IpaqHQ. There are others if you search on "griffin" you'll see them all.

You should check out the Rx3000 series, it is geard towards multimedia and has CIR. It also comes with Nevo which is supposed to be very good.

The 4700 can probably "do the job" with a bit of third party software, but it is a blunt too for remote control, not least because the IR port is on the base of the unit, not the top.

Are you really going to be carrying your 4700 beauty (*which it most certainly is!) All over the house to turn on the TV? It's kind of like driving a Mac Truck all over your neighbourhood to get the kids to school or to the soccer field.

I had the same vague notion when I first got it 6 months ago, but have not bothered using the iPaQ as a remote control after the first day when the novelty wore off.

Would have to agree with these comments. Great Mac truck analogy. It truly is a novelty, I had a build in remote on my Sony and it had great range. However, I still failed to use it frequently.

i thought this too - the old universal i had was one i could program macros into but it is no longer operational. But many of the other universals you can buy are larger and in most cases heavier than the IPAQ - i would love to get the any of the phillips universals but (http://www.abtelectronics.com/product/13669.html) comparing the cost and size i feel the ipaq is more reaslonable..

I have purchased RemoteControl II and it does a wonderful job. The screen can be set to rotate 180 to fix the problem of the IR being on the bottom. You can set macro buttons to do just about anything. Also I usually have my 4705 with me when I am watching TV as I play games during commercials and such. And another wonderful feature is that as it is a felony punishable by death for kids to touch my 4705 it never gets lost under the couch. I have it set up to control my video camera, the stereo in the car, the projector at work plus all the entertainment center stuff at home. So if your serious about a remote control app for your IPaq then this is the one. At first I was under the assumption that the range from the 4705 was poor but found that this was just a myth. Range from the 4705 is a good 15 feet.

Hope this helps.

After having to execute several of my children for touching the 4700, I realized that given the legal issues involved, and the cost of having new ones, I was better off putting the iPaq out of their reach than increasing the body count any further. One more reason why it can't be used as a remote control in our house.

I do not believe kids can be taught to avoid touching anything shiny that makes funny noises if you bang on it hard enough - even if their lives are at stake.
