WM2005 My thoughts
Great, we're getting WM05. I am exited for this, but after reviewing some of the initial information of it, along with some screen snaps recently posted, I'm left feeling a bit underwhelmed.

Looks like the same stuff (pretty much) we have in WM2003SE. Same thickass title and start bars taking up 20% of the screen ?!? I don't see where MS is moving towards a better UI for handhelds. I'm sure there are going to be some enhancements for VGA but quite frankly I'm a bit dissappointed.

I'm -satisfied- with my 4705, but thats pretty much all I am. Its better than no PDA at all, but it could be so much better. Apple could turn the 4700 into a PDA users wet dream...but I digress. I'm cursed/blessed having been a Newton user way back when, so I know where the bar "should" be.

On a positive note, I'm very happy that HP is offering the upgrade though. Good for them. They will start to get quid-pro-quo from me again if they keep this up.

Thoughts?

As a personal and business user, one of the best things of the new OS is the updated Office apps. I can't tell you how many time I have scratched my head thinking when Word or Excel docs lost their formatting when brought over from the PC to the PPC.

Aside from that, you are right, now much else that's overwhelmingly needed. SE added the ability to perform view-switching.

One would hope that the code base has been re-written or tweaked to be better optimized for our devices. Remember, the existing code base has been in place since 2000 (not withstanding the lastest SE changes).

From everything I've read, WM5 wasn't meant to be a completely new/revamped knock-your-socks-off OS. It was meant to converge the 3 MS mobile operating systems into one. That should make it easier for MS to improve the OS over time since they won't have to maintain 3 environments.

I've just finished watching the Bill Gates Keynote from the Microsoft Mobile & Embedded Developers Conference in Las Vegas.

It's rather long 1hr 3min. - But very informative.

Why not take a look if you've got the time to kill!

If it is true that they will not support wireless activesync I am going to be very disappointed. I am excited about the built in apps being improved though. Has anyone seen any info on how much space 5.0 is going to take up in ROM?

I think I read somewhere that it will take up / require 32 megs?

From what I have read the new Office solution is still stripping out a lot of the formating... I for one would be much happier to be given the choice of just installing the OS... there is nothing in the bundle that I use other than activesync... There are much better third party programs available for anything that MS offers in the basic package.

I would much rather they work on putting together a leaner faster more efficient OS than adding on all these extra's to bloat everything.

But then this is just what I want... I know there are many other's out there that are happy with the current situation.

How about all the software I have? will it also run under WM 5.0 as on WM2003SE? or do I have to start looking for the new versions and paying more money!?!?!

I had hoped they would at least change the networking options and make it more customizable and better organized, instead of just the silly "programs that connect to the internet should use:" etc.

I see the option to chose ISP/work everywhere, and half the time I just randomly pick one until it works without knowing how or why.

They need a more efficent system...Maybe a page that has all of the network options in one place, instead of random menus in random locations.

Fully agree about ISP/work very confusing- if they havenot sorted this as it all dates from days of dila up modem and does not relate to issues such as home and wireless LAN which are now the norm.
