Questions About The HX4700
All,

I currently owna IPAQ h2210, purchased in November, I love it very much and use it to its full capacity, Video, Games, E books, Word Processing, MP3 player. The PPC was my introduction into the PDa market after dropping my beloved Psion Series 5mx - I had previously resisted the PPC format of Large Screen and no keyboard (was even going to buy the Sony Clie Clam Shell Thing, at great expense). Anyway I lauched myself into the PDA market blindly and feel I bought a good IPAQ, but not the best.

Anyway enough of my life story. My post regards the HX4700 described as the flagship on the HP website. I have studied the spec and require some resolution on some key issus before ploghing money in this direction.

1. The Hardware navigation button seems to be a pad, my 2210 has a knob which is at best average. Is oit any good?

2. Is there a CF Card Slot?

3. VGA screen, I assume my existing programs which run under 320x240 will display ok? EG AOE, Pocket Informant

4. Should I be waiting for them to ship with Windows Mobile 5?

And a nasty one not specific to this forum - Virtual Pool Mobile/ Age of Empires and Pocket Informant, will they be transferrable onto my new device without having to purchase new licenses?

The Nav. Pad is ok for getting around in apps but is hard to get use to, and very hard to handle in games.

Yes

Yes, most apps will work just fine under the new resolution and PI will come pre installed. Now if you use an app like oz_vga or se_vga to switch to "Real VGA" then you might run into some issues with some applications.

I don't know for sure but I doubt that HP will offer the 47xx with WM5 installed. ( they are going to want to sell you an upgrade ) But I could be wrong with this. Never the less I would not let that keep you from getting yourself one of these wonderful machines, as it may cost you for the upgrade anyway.

Not sure about this one. I would think that you will be able to re-use your user name and everything should transfer ok. But I doubt that you will be able to run it on both units at the same time with the same user name. Also some apps use the serial number of the unit to generate a registration key and if that is the case then the answer to you question would be no.

The pad thing is a bit controversial. Check out the review discussion thread or any other similar forums. You'll find that there are people that like it and people that don't. One thing seems fairly constant is that it's no good for games. personally I don't play a lot of games so that doesn't bother me.

The other thing is to ask yourself how much you actually use the D pad on your current device. I've just switched froma Toshiba e330 which I liked a lot. I hardly ever used the D pad on the Tosh so maybe that's another reason it doesn't bother me. If your similar than don't let it put you off because in other respects it's a great machine as far as I can see. The display is the best on the market and the processor is v quick, lots of storage options and WiFi seems to work well.

You can certainly install PI on the new machine with your current license. the 4700 does come with it anyway - so unless you want PI 2005, you don't have to worry about it.

You should have no problem transferring Virtual Pool Mobile/ Age of Empires, I've done it without incident.
