Traveling with 4705
I live in Utah and I am traveling to Europe in a few weeks and I would like to take my IPAQ with me. I have a 120 volt converter, but I'm kind of leary about plugging my $600 IPAQ into a plug that may fry it. Any suggestions?

Would it be convenient just bringing iPAQ Hx4700's own power charger (detatched from the cradle) and an adapter for this charger to fit into the traveling country's wall outlets?

Have a look at your plug-pack. I am not in the USA, but my plug-pack accepts 100 to 240 volts, I would suspect that yours might too ? (read the sticker on your pack, if it is there )

In which case, all you need is a converter adapter from US 2-pin to European stlye plug, and don't need the 120 v converter.......

I had got the impression that the higher voltage would be a problem for my PPC. Thanks for the info. I looked at my charger and it showed input at 100-240V.

Cool. Just to confirm for you- I should have mentioned my country's voltage is 240 volts so I'd say you're definitely good to go
Have a good trip !

100-240V means worldwide convertable. You will have no problem travelling the world. I was using my iPAQ 4150 with the same AC in some major cities in China (220v in China). Since 220 fits in that range, so I just plug in to wall outlets in my hotel rooms to charge.

What is crucial is that one has to look at AC specs and maybe even manuals first.

WORLD STANDARDS describes the details of the followings.

Quote:
* Voltage and frequency
* Plugs and sockets
* What do I need to use my appliances abroad ?
* Why can only “electric” appliances be used with a converter, and not “electronic” ones ?
* Trick to know the local voltage and frequency

Its all good
I live in UK and USA plus I travel 8 months of the year world wide and I have not met a normal power supply that the unit did not like !! My 4705 is USA supplied and I confirm the power supply is ok ( note the power supply is better than a converter as it also accepts 50 hz , US is 60 hz )

WORLD STANDARDS, it is stated about different frequencies as the follows:

Quote:
The difference in cycles may cause the motor in a 50 Hz appliance to operate slightly faster when used on 60 Hz electricity. This cycle difference will cause electric clocks and timing circuits to keep incorrect time: European alarm clocks will run faster on 60 Hz electricity and American clocks will lose some 10 minutes every hour when used in Europe. However, most modern electronic equipment like battery chargers, computers, printers, stereos, DVD players, etc. are usually not affected by the difference in cycles and adjust themselves accordingly the slower cycles.

?
Strangely that was the point I was making, the charger supplied is 50- 60 hertz tolerant. Other converters may not be which can cause problems especially with trigger circuits etc

Not to worry it is NOT a problem anyway

No, it is not a problem. I'm from the States and am currently in Europe. I've been over several times and all I've ever needed was the converter for the actual power plug itself. (for the prongs that go in the wall)

I would imagine that it would be safe to plug in 4705 in Europe because I know some people on this site are from Europe and never mention having problems with their PDA getting fried.

My UK spec 4700 charged perfectly whilst I was in New York a few weeks ago - the only thing was those funny two pin plugs and sockets you have over there, the charger plugged into an adaptor in the outlet seemed a little insecure. It's about time you lot got a better system

Its not so bad !!
Ok the 110 is a lot safer than the 240 in UK but your point about the 2 flat blades not being as secure is true. Especially when worn or when dealing with a large overhanging weight ( like a socket adaptor with a heavy 3 pin UK plug attached to it !!) What can you do ??

I suppose trying to change the infrastructure would be a bit like trying to get us to drive on the right or adopt the Euro as currency
