Try WM5.0 NOW for free!
So Microsoft only wants to release the WM5.0 emulator to paid developers. I think not! I think I've achieved a first with this one:

1) Get the emulator from here (login with your MS passport, then enter MSDEVICE when it asks you for a GuestID)
2) Install the emulator.
3) Delete "C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Device Emulator Preview\PPC_2003_SE\PPC_2003_SE_WWE_ARMv4.bin"
4) Go here to download the WM5.0 SDK (it's 174MB so be patient!).
5) Go here to download ZipZag.
6) Install ZipZag.
7) Go here to download MSI extension support for ZipZag.
8) Extract the above file to "C:\Program Files\ZipZag"
9) Run ZipZag and open "Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC SDK.msi" in it.
10) Sort the files by Size (largest to top)
11) Extract the biggest file (sdkfiles.cab)
12) Using winrar open this file.
13) Sort the files by size (again, largest to top)
14) Extract "_208PPC_USA_bin" to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Device Emulator Preview\PPC_2003_SE\PPC_2003_SE_WWE_ARMv4.bin" (the file you deleted earlier!)
15) Go to "Start -> Programs -> Microsoft Device Emulator Preview -> Emulate Pocket PC-WM 2003 SE(Cold Boot)" - Note that the smartphone and square versions WONT WORK!
16) WAIT (about 30 seconds) for it to boot. When faced with the new welcome screen, click on it then wait another 30 or so seconds.
17) Enjoy your sneak-peek of WM5.0!

Attached is a proof shot of it working which also illustrates the newest feature - persistant storage! Thats the new "Memory" control panel application!

Haha - just playing around with it a bit... theres even an "Error Reporting" thing in it like there is with XP. When things crash you can send a report to Microsoft - I guess we really are paying to be beta testers!

100% legal. You have obtained ALL files legally and I never agreed to any EULA with the emulator images.

If anyone is too scared to do this, just ask WM5.0 questions and I'll do my best to find an answer for you.

Further info:

"_208PPC_USA_1_BIN" is a VGA pocket PC image! Run it with the following command line:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Device Emulator Preview\DeviceEmulator.exe" "C:\_208PPC_USA_1_BIN" /memsize 128 /video 480x640x32

"_208PPC_USA_2_BIN" is a phone-enabled Pocket PC image.
"_208PPC_USA_3_BIN" is a VGA phone-enabled Pocket PC image (see above for enabling).

Also, this works with the Smartphone SDK which can be obtained from
here. Follow the same steps as in the original post only
unpack images to: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Device Emulator Preview\SP_2003_SE\SP_2003_SE_WWE_ARMv4.bin" then launch "Start -> Programs -> Microsoft Device Emulator Preview -> Emulate Smartphone-WM 2003 SE(Cold Boot)".

Want more RAM in your emulation?

Start -> Run: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Device Emulator Preview\DeviceEmulator.exe" "C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Device Emulator Preview\PPC_2003_SE\PPC_2003_SE_WWE_ARMv4.bin" /memsize 128

Anyway, enjoy!

Noted WM5.0 issues/ differences:
  • There is a "/Documents and Settings" directory (as can be found in Windows XP).
  • Error reporting.
  • Download manager (no VGA icon!).
  • Windows Media 10.
  • Pictures & Videos application.
  • "Jawbreaker" renamed to "Bubble Breaker".
  • ActiveSync v4.0 retains a green background when connected to a WM5.0 device.
  • PowerPoint Mobile.
  • MUCH nicer theme.
  • Soft buttons at the bottom are a nice touch.
  • GPS settings.
  • Persistent storage. Not too sure on this - I gave the device 128MB of RAM and it seemed to share it between Storage and Memory (as WM2003 does). Maybe this is an emulation issue.
  • Battery installation date.
  • Wireless power control.
  • Bluetooth driver.
  • Big "MSN Options" application in the control panel to setup Hotmail/ Messenger/ SMS behaviour.
  • Pocket MSN today plugin (quick access to Hotmail, MSN Messenger and MSN Mobile homepage).
  • Network connection "bubble" now shows at the bottom and the left soft button changes to "Connect" when a connection is available.
  • Mostly new sounds.
  • A few icon tweaks.
  • Full-screen programme installer.
  • The today screen taskbar is now ABOVE the bottom soft touch task bar (see second picture which shows activesync icon and skmenu icon)
  • Notifications dont show up until you press the soft key that says "Notification" (again, see second picture).

Software tests:
  • Wisbar DOESNT WORK in WM5.0 (see attached picture)! A new version will be needed.
  • Snails didnt seem to work (could be emulator related).
  • Tweaks 2k2 doesnt load.
  • Resco Explorer 2003 works though some icon problems were encountered (could be the emulator).
  • PocketMusic crashes.
  • Pocket Informant 2005 refuses to install on it claiming it NEEDS 2002/2003/2003SE.
  • IM+ works (different device key makes it impossible to register - is this going to be a problem when upgrading our HX4700 ROMs?
  • Sprite Backup Premium works.
  • 1-Calc works.
  • Agile Messenger works.
  • Pocket Earth crashes.
  • eXPerience crashes.
  • BetaPlayer works, though it doesnt cope gracefully with the new soft menus (they overlap the time trackbar.
  • CalliGrapher refuses to install (built in detection says that it is not compatible with Pokcet PC 2005 or later)
  • Lexionary works.
  • Magic button works, but doesnt fit in with the new theme at all (it reverts back to the plain 1 colour task bar)
  • Microsoft Voice Command 1.5 - complains that I'm installing to "" and suggests installing to main memory (this is probably to do with the new persistant storage system). Other than this, it appears to work.
  • PhatNet doesnt seem to load.
  • PhatSpell installs fine, but doesnt actually spell check properly (it seems like it cant cope with the window focus and the new bubbles appearing at the bottom)
  • PocketIRC works.
  • Pocket Mechanic works though the new UI seems to make it so it can only fit 2 rows of icons in rather than 3.
  • PocketRAR works.
  • PocketTV seems to work fine - no video shown though... again could be emulator specific.
  • PockeTTY works.
  • PocketWinc works (presumably - cant really test WIFI in an emulator!)
  • Resco Photo Viewer works - the initial extension registration page doesnt cope very well with the new UI (the "select all" button is overlapped by the lower task bar)
  • SKHexEd works.
  • SKMenu works.
  • SKTools works.
  • VM Network Browser works.

These lists are a work in progress so check back for updates. In all, theres not really that much different worth getting excited about except for persistant storage - this is the only reason I'll be upgrading. It seems that there will be teething problems for a long time while everyone makes their applications 5.0 compatible.

This installs and emulates on the desktop right? Don't want to mess up my PPC with a bad ROM.

Sounds interesting, I'll test it out tomorrow.

Thanks for posting all the instructions!
