about to take the plunge!
Hi,

Well, I think i'm about to abuse my credit card and take the plunge. I've been waiting for Tom Tom Nav5 but have now decided to give up waiting as the release date seems to keep getting pushed back.

here is what I'm going for. Let me know if you think i've left anything out (not that I can afford anything else!!):

HP ipaq hx4700
tom tom nav 3
Flash card (not sure which CF or SD)
GlobalSat BT 338 Bluetooth Gps Receiver
tom tom car mount
InnoPocket Magnum Case
hx4700 screen protectors
GPSassist for tomtom 3

And maybe GPS tuner to try out a bit of geocaching.

I figure i'll get the use of tomtom nav3 for a good few months then TTN5 should be out and be easy to get hold of (and hopefully bug free).

Does anyone see any problems with that set-up and does it matter which flash card i go for?

Thanks for any help.

Wait!
I think you might be being a little rash getting TomTom 3. All indications at the moment are that TT5 will be out at the start of June, which is next week... I'm in the same boat - I've already got my iPAQ but I'm waiting for TT5.

Also, I note you were going to get a non-TomTom BT GPS receiver - any reason why? The one that will come with TT5 has the latest chip inside (apparently, I'm no expert) and is supposed to be very good, and with improved battery life.

Anyway, that's my 2p worth.

tomtom 5 isn't out until mid june now!! then it could be delayed again! Then it will probably be difficult to get hold of for a few weeks as demand is high. So I think another months wait (if not more) is to be expected. So i'm going for nav3 now which people that have it have been happy with for the past year or more, then i can wait for the whole nav5 fever to calm down and the initial bugs to get fixed.

The GlobalSat BT 338 Bluetooth Gps Receiver has the new chip set and has had very good reviews. And it's available now!

Out of interest, what source do you have for that? I'm failing to find any concrete evidence of when it will be out from anywhere

And where have you found that is still stocking TT3? I've only found one place, and that was with the wired GPS mouse. I too am tempted by the GlobalSat receiver, but only if I can find the software on its own.

This forum at pocket gps world:

Of course it's not concrete evidence as there is none. Just what people are saying. Tom Tom are being very evasive about when nav5 will come out.

I've just ordered tomtom nav3 from here:
http://www.superetrader.co.uk/index.php
They seem to have 3 left so hurry!
Also amazon claim to have tomtom3 in stock.

Of course tomtom nav5 will be releised the moment my stuff in delivered!!!

My main concern about ordering TT3 is the fact that the maps will be out-of-date... I was p*ssed off enough when I bought AutoRoute 2005 to find that it still doesn't have the M6 Toll road on there, especially as most of my journeys at the moment are London <> Manchester. I know that TT will be offering an upgrade, but I'm trying not to let me weak willpower end up costing me more money. However, I have been debating the separate GPS option as well, especially as I'm considering some of the memory-map (http://www.memory-map.co.uk) stuff.

Yes the maps will be out of date but people have been using it for the past few years and managing. I'm sure I can cope with a few out of date maps until i up grade in a few months.

The new maps on tomtom 5 will be out of date within a few months of it coming out and people will moan but still use it for the next year or so. The PDA will also be out of date as soon as I buy it!!!

Don't forget to budget for software. There's a few plugins that are worth having and maybe even a game or two!
Check out blueradish My PDA for a pretty comprehensive list of potentials.
Congrats on your new system...you're gonna love it!

I was in the same situation in the last month and I've bought tom tom 3 + GPS receiver.
It is very good and when tom tom 5 out I'll update software.

Tom Tom with iPAQ HX4700
Hi - I'm running Tom Tom Nav 3 with the ipaq HX4700 and it works great. The only other thing you should get is a 1 gig hi-speed sd card. The card that comes with the ipaq is far too small to hold the maps. They're pretty cheap nowadays. Hope this helps.

Oh, by the way, I bough the complete package with the car kit, pda and Tom Tom from Global Positioning Systems - http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk

better price than I could find even on e-bay and it all worked together nicely.

CF memory is faster than SD memory on the 4700, so probably best to get a CF card first.

Thanks guys.

I'm in the process of setting everything up (it all arrived yesterday).
I was a bit disappointed with the way tomtom nav3 was packaged. A couple of disc's and a quick start guide shoved in an unmarked jiffy bag!!! Isn't it supposed to be in a proper printed box with manuals etc?

I'm also having trouble getting screen protectors that are the right size for the hx4700. First the company sent ones that were too small so they sent replacements that were exactly the same!!! I'm right in thinking that the screen protector should cover the WHOLE screen, aren't I?

I did also get a Kingston 1GB elite pro CF card.

Anyway, off to London tomorrow so I hope i can get it all up a running today (so i dont get lost!)

Hi Lorax. I don't know about the packaging for TomTom. When I got destinator it cam in a DVD type slender case (but with all the professional looking art work) with only minimal printed documentation.

A screen protector specifically for the 4700 should fit the whole screen. I use Boxwave (they to ship over to the UK) and they fit perfectly.

I was in London about a year ago - had a great tiome. I would love to see a nav package direct someone through all the turns and splits. That would almost be an amusement ride in itself!

Good luck getting everything set up.

Yes, it should be fun.
I've just set up all my speed camera warnings so i'm looking forward to trying it out.
