Evaporating Main Memory Issue...
This became a sub-thread of another thread and I thought it might draw some interesting input and would be worth it's own thread....

Haz said.....

don't know about you guys, but my ppc is draining my memory somewhere. i notice that i have~28mb available, but after a soft rest, i get ~33mb.
To which I answered...

Quote:
I did a little experiment...
I checked and recorded my main memory and I had a total of 27.52 available
Then I opened and closed 6 programs or operations and noted my memory afterward. It had dropped to 27.19. It increased after one program but not to above the original amount.
Then I did a soft reset and checked my total: 30.82
so it does seem to slowly suck up main memory over the course of opening and closing aps and then recoups it on a soft reset.
Comments anyone?
Also...

i was wondering if the OS writes bunch of files and stores them on the ram to keep track of what's been done. should such file exist, can we can change the its attributes to read-only, the OS will not make changes to it and take up ram. does such file exist? if so where/name? or is that all wishful thinking?
Does anyone know the cause and is there a cure?

I assume you do know that clicking the 'X' just minimises the app and doesn't close it. So, given that, I assume that the O/S creates a bunch of memory entries for running apps (state of the screen etc) and just holds them there. When you soft reset, they are all gone, of course.

Any use ?

I was wondering the same thing so I opened and closed PIM 2005 several times and the available memory slowly declined each time even after actually closing the application in Memory Settings by clicking Stop All running program option. When I chose the Close X button option in Spb Pocket Plus settings, the decline seemed to be somehwhat less but was still evident.

I was also using Spb Pocket Plus to close the apps which I believe actually closes the app rather than just minimize it. It still may have something to do with the OSs intention of just minimizing though.

Anyone else noticed that you are both using Spb Pocket Plus - could that be the cause of the memory leak?

I am using Handyswitcher. It does actually shut down application instead of "smart minimize" of WM2003SE. I have posted previously that I even change some colour display setting within the Handymenu and Handylaucher that the memory NOT coming back according to the free memory left in the hx4700 default Rhino panel. The more frequent open and close application, even they claimed that they are compatible with WM2003SE, the more memory leaked. The only way can get back the memory is soft reset. I have no such experience with my h2210 and h4150 of WM2003. I guess there is drawback of WM2003SE and hopefully can be solved in WM5.

I'm not seeing this sort of memory loss. I'm using Magic Button. I was using WisBar Advance, but stopped using it because of incompatibility issues I was having with it.

I noticed that I lose some memory when I open the programs window or a folder that I have on the start menu, but it's only a one time thing. Trying to close it using both the HP program manager and Magic Button does not recover the memory, but it's clearly not a memory leak since it only happens the first time you use it. The memory must stay allocated for this once it's used.

Not Spb Pocket Plus, I thought so as well, but after removing this application and resetting everything, the "Memory Leak" was actually worse. Selecting Stop All in the Memory Settings screen doesn't seem to get all the memory back either.

Along the line with memory disappearing issue, does anyone have problem with using the built-in HP ProtectTools? I have HP ProtectTools to lock and encrypt device after 60 minutes. When I powered the device back on and after I put in the password, I lost roughly 20 Meg of program memory (i.e. before: 38 Meg available, after: 18 Meg available). The only way to get it back is do a soft reset.
Below are the programs I have running:
XCPUScalar
OmegaOne Battery Pack Pro & Program Bar
OmegaOne Journal Bar
PocketBreeze
Thank you much in advance for any thoughts.

Lots of people have issues with this programme - nthe main one being battery drain/ turning the unit on - do a search and you will find others problems.

I read most of those threads but none of them has the problem like mine.
May be there are some third party security software that will do better.
