Slooooow and just plain a pain in the....
About a month ago I purchased a new 4705 and sold my trusty 2215. I upgraded thinking that I wanted a bit bigger display, and something that worked a bit faster. So far, I like the display, but this thing is just plain slooooow and generally a real pain to use. Some programs will not run on it either at all or like my old 2215. I'm thinking about getting rid of this one and getting a 2215 again, it was VASTLY superior. Can some one help?

#1. From the main menu, it takes 15 seconds for tasks (or any other program) to load, even after a soft reset. I only have about 15 tasks listed. It almost acts like it wants to lock up.

#2. Existing programs just don't work right, like excel. It locks up, even after a soft reset.

#3. Will not run programs like Filemaker mobile 2.1.

I have no other programs installed other than the ones that came with the machine because they don't work. I'm always getting some kind of error message.

Does this thing need to go back to hp? Or is there something here that I'm missing? No, I have not called hp yet. They are a last resort as I've had experience with them in the past with my hp desk top.

Any suggestions??

Thanks!

Perform a hard reset and see if the problem(s) still exist. If a clean system performs ok, start installing apps one by one.

If your device still peforms like a pig after a HR, HP will have no choice but to switch it for another.

HTH!

I found the 4705 was slower than I thought it should be, but I wouldn't call it slow (how subjective). It was much closer to my 3115 than I would have thought and the 3115 has a 300 Mhz (vs 624 I think).

I never had any problems with P Excel, but didn't use it long and moved to the SoftMaker products.

Filemaker Mobile is up to version 7. I am guessing it wouldn't be happy with any newer PDA, not just the 4705. I see release annoucements for version 2.1 back in Sept 2002.

Where are you installing your programs? If you install them into "Main Memory" it's going to function slower. Have a look at blueradishs MY PDA for some examples of where to place the various types of programs. You'll notice he indicates by a colored asterik where he stores a program or data. Most games for example will be on a storage card. Use as little of Main Memory as possible. What programs have you got loaded?

Red,

I think your statement is a little misleading. Overall, if an application is stored in main memory, it loads faster than if stored on a mult-media card. I think it is more accurate to say that a cetain amount of program memory should be available based on how many open apps you have open at the time and the amount of resources (processes) that are running.

I know VGA apps take more resources but I found that when I had a 4150 with 64mb of ram, that 14-16mb of program memory was the sweet spot for running apps (in which I would only keep a few in program memory at any one time). For a VGA device, I am sure that that 14-16mb limit should be enlarged to about 20mb or more.

Dan,

How much free program memory do you have available after a soft reset?

JNGold,
Too little knowledge is dangerous!
Yeh, I guess I had the general idea but...
I guess I was thinking more about how when I didn't store stuff in File Store or on a card that my system would pretty much become non functional. Thanks for settin' me straight.

Got my issues fixed! I did a hard reset, un-installed a filemaker mobile program. My first problem began when I could not run File maker mobile. That seemed to slow everything down when it was not happy. I did a little checking around in the Filemaker Pro 6 program, the user had to be RESET! Edit>Preferences>Application>Plugins>select and highlight Mobile Companion>Configure>Reset User. TaaDaa! It took a while for my desk top and mobile to talk, but they seemed to work it out. So, my 4705 works just fine with File Maker mobile 2.1 and File maker pro with SP2. The PDA works much better now. The true culprit with the file maker mobile was "Invalid User FileMaker Mobile synchronization failed". Users and machines did not match as I changed from the 2215 to the 4705. The incomplete install of file maker mobile 2.1 must have caused an issue with the 4705.

Thanks!

Cool! I'm glad you got it figured out, and thanks for posting the cause and fix here. Might help someone else in the future.

And I hope you enjoy your 4700 as much as we all enjoy ours.
