Anyone successfully changed languages?
Having worked with this extensively for several days I am seeing that none of the techniques used to switch languages for the older iPAQs work successfully for the hx4700. Having both ROMs from the German and English I can successfully restore and upgrade the German version (original language for my 4700) but no success for the equal English version. From SD card hex editing to flashing it never works for the other language. HP has apparently implemented more techniques to keep people from choosing which Language to use.

so has anyone succeeded?

Would you please not open two threads on the same subject?

Concerning your problem, call HP if they are willing to help you out, keep it friendly and maybe you are lucky.....

perhaps you should seek help for your vison problems
I think what gschoots meant is that there was already a thread running discussing the possibility of changing languages on the iPAQ (not necessarily started by yourself) and your comments could have as easily been posted there rather than start a new thread.

Hope this makes it clear.

hey Ashley,

yes perhaps he meant that but he said "would you please not open 2 threads..." so I assumed he meant it that way...all the same I did not see the previous post before creating mine and while the subject matter is concerning the same topic (language) my post is slightly different as it is asking whether "if any one has successfully done so" the other thread is a person asking how to change the language.

hope this clears things up.

It is not my tutorial, I just found it on the net. But I am also interested in changing my language from German to English. But at the moment, I am on holiday and do not have my computer equipment with me. I would have followed the tutorial myself, but as said, have no tools with me currently.

If you managed the process with Ger->Eng rather than Fra->Eng, which I think should be possible also, I am interessted in your comments, suggestions and possibly improvements. Maybe you could PM them to me in German.

Well no success so far. I ran into some problems with dd under windows (yes there is a version for windows).

basically I am flashing the written image now and will see if I have killed it or not

the problems I ran into were firstly a limit on the block size command, I had to run it without specifying the block size for it to back up the file. Problem is since there is no file system it was backing up the whole card which in my case is 1GB way too long to do that. So having previous experience with successfully flashing to bad ROMs I forged ahead and directly wrote the eng rom to the sd card, but after a while it would cut out with a bad parameter message. So then I did the file splicing mentioned in the article. I basically took the first block sector from the english ROM and replaced the german block at the same location. This time it wrote and wrote and wrote forever. I finally just stopped it, but when I put the card in this time it recognized and asked to flash it. IF this fails I'll have to rerun the german install to fix it, but hell it is worth a try.

Not sure why I had the problems I did with dd under windows it may just be too immature at the moment to sucessfully do this.

anyway hope this helps
