Battery life after Rom update.
Hi Everyone. Has anyone else noticed that the 4700 drains the batteries rapidly since the rom update. We have a few 4700 in the office and at least 2 of us have seen this. Yesterday I was out and about and with the ipaq switched off all day I got home to find there was only 18% battery left... This, I am sure never happened before.

Thanks for any advice.

Tim

Why not use SEARCH? Show respect to others and don't make them read same things again and again. Search before you start a new topic. At least look through the first page. This topic is uder discussion now and if you were a little bit more attentive you could notice it.
The topic you are looking for is called "Battery Problems with new ROM".

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. There is no need to flame... I had searched and read that post. However, that is talking about extended battery life in normal usage. My question is about the standard battery with the ipaq switched off. I too find it annoying having many people ask the same question on forums. However, I believe mine is a different question.

Are you sure it was switched off and not just the screen dimmed?

Also if it had been switched on (by accident) it would have drained quite quickly and then the 'defence mechanism' kicked in at 20% battery remaining and shut it down

It's not only about extended battery. People say, that their extended batteries now work as standart before the update. It means that standart batteries now work for less time respectively. In that topic there's also a link to HP forum where it's thoroughly discussed. ROM 1.10.08 affects all battery types (Standart 1800 mAh, HP 3600 mAh Extended and Mugen 4500 mAh)
Read carefully and you will understand it's about the same.

After reading this board and two others it sounds like HP missed an important piece of the programming with respect to power regulation.

After years of having these kind of issues I did not upgrade, I waited to hear if other users had any problems had any problems with the ROM update. I am tired of wasting time with these kind of problems.

Now it appears that the battery problems are significant enough that HP SHOULD STOP DISTRIBUTING THE ROM UPDATE UNTIL THEY FIX IT!

Does anyone else think that HP was wrong here!!??

I agree with you wholeheartedly...and thanks to everyone who posted their problems. I really don't know enough to start playing around and I'm a subscriber to the "if it ain't bust don't fix it" belief! It took me long enough to get it working as I wanted it to.

Hi,

I am not in the IT field and I am a new HP Pocket PC user. It seems that there are users experiencing the battery issue after new ROM update. I am just curious about whether HP's engineers had tested the battery issue before the new ROM release. I tend to assume that the new release should have been thoroughly tested before the distribution because issues cause infamous reputation. I am wondering why this issue is not announced as a potential problem to some users.

Can anyone share some thoughts or experience on why new releases cause new problems which should have been mostly resolved before the releases? How issues could be missed during the testing by the talents in HP? I am wondering whether HP has a beta testing process for this new ROM release to catch issues? Thanks.

Is there an older ROM available on their website? The link next to the new ROM appears only to be for German.

EDIT: I found the HP FTP site listing where you can find the SP29741.exe file and download it yourself. Try this link:
ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp29501-30000/

The original English ROM is named SP29741.exe.

Too Bad we can't get HP and other suppliers to recognize the issues they cause with this kind of "Service"

Quote:
Dear HP Customer,

Thank you for contacting HP eServices.

This is with reference to your e-mail regarding the issue with your iPAQ hx4705.

We understand your concern and regret any inconvenience this may have caused.

This case is that of a bad charge read from the ROM.

HP engineering is currently working on this and soon an update will be released to address this issue.

Unfortunately, we do not have the exact release date for the update.

Once it is released, it will be made available in the below mentioned web link:
