iPAQ acting pretty sluggish...
Hey, I have owned my iPAQ for little over a half-month now, and it is really starting to act kooky. I am noticing really bad lag times when I go to the programs folder; it takes several seconds for all of the program icons to appear. Also, if I click on any of the tasks/outlook/calendar on the Today screen it takes between 20 sec and 1 minute to load. I have had several instances where it becomes highly irradic: screen freezes, no mouse movement, not accepting touch-screen imput, all of this with very little running in memory, and between 25- 30 megs of program storage available. I've done soft resets with no luck. Its strange because it just began acting this way the past few days.

Programs installed on ROM:

Astraware Hellfire (Trial)
IonFX Geo Rally 2005 (Trial)
Argentum (Demo)
Handmark Tetris (Full)
Handmark Super Solitare Sampler (Full)
Handmark PocketChess (Full)
Handmark Colours (Full)
Handmark Checkers (FUll)
Handmark Backgammon (Full)
3am Labs Remote Control (Demo)
Majeres iRemote (Trial)
Lexionary Dictionary (Trial)
AoE (Demo)
BetaPlayer (FUll)
Vito Dialer (Demo)
Warfare, inc (Demo)
Hexacto Links (demo)
PocketMusic (Full)
iPAQ Foldable Keyobard v4.03 driver
Resco Picture Viewer (demo)
WIndows theme switcher
Tonaya Weather to Go (Beta)
Vito Remote (demo)
Mini- Trans Canada (demo)
HAL9000 SE_VGA
Clearvue Worksheet viewer (full)
Clearvue document viewer (full)
Kasuei Hitchhiker
PPX-SR Alpha

Programs in RAM
- Nada

I am really beginning to regret my decision to buy the hx, and am seriously considering eBaying it and getting a 5555. I don' want to give up VGA, but for $600 I expected a helluva lot better performance than the BS its giving me right now. My 206 mhz strongARM ipaq 3835 performed faster than this thing ever has at loading calendar/contacts/prgram page/etc... Should I sell it for a 5555?

Have you done any soft resets? These are key in cleaning out the junk in MM. Even though you have programs loaded to places other than RAM, they still dump files in there. A soft reset is needed to cleanit out.

I wouldn't necessarily blame this on the 4700 alone ! Since soft re-sets are not working , you may want to consider
1> Installing trial of SK tools and clearing out junk from your registry (trial only lets you do IIRC 6 items at a time but I would highly recommend the purchase of this utility and/or MemMaid). There would be a fair few entries in your registry pointing to trash stuff from your installs
2>consider back-up to SD/CF card using your sprite back-up (IIRC=iPaq backup) then hard-re-set then restore from back-up. I tend to do this every now and then either from necessity or for the heck of it and it really seems to help with smooth running of my device.

hope this helps !

Did you do a HARD reset before loading everything onto your PDA? I had similar problems where mine was slow and also crashed a lot. I would advocate backing up your system (don't forget the iPAQ File Store) to a SD/CF card and doing a hard reset and then restoring everything. Also - have you loaded the new ROM update? You might find that your original image is corrupt so loading the new image will also fix that potential problem.
Once you have Hard Reset and Loaded your new ROM image then restore your backup image.
You should find that your system is now ok.
If it isn't - send it back to HP for repair - you shouldn't be expereincing the problems that you describe - the hx4700 -running properly - is one cool tool!

Yeah, the moment I got it, I reflashed the ROM to the latest update, so it technically did have a hard reset before installing anything. But I did another HR last night and now the device is going crazy. All of the icons in programs/settings are missing, as well as the start icon. w/e. I called HP and I am sending it back for "repair" (i.e. they will just send me another of the same device) so yeah, thanks for the help guys! I will definitely keep a registry cleaner program on the next one when it gets here!

Don't give up hope. There are always "lemons" out there. The HX4700 - when you get a good one - is one sweet thing.
Keep in touch with the forum - drop us a line when you get your new iPAQ.
