Program/Storage RAM Question
Just so I'm sure in my own mind, when I check my memory settings on the HX4700 there is Program and Storage memory in RAM. I presume storage memory is just that... if you install a Program in RAM, it will eat up whatever storage memory it takes. When you run that program... or any program... it will eat up a certain amount of program memory, correct? Once closed, it 'should' release that program memory, right?

If I'm right, then it would make sense to maximize your Program memory and minimize the amount of Storage memory one uses by installing most all Programs on my high speed SD and CF Card, with only Pocket Informant, Pocket Breeze, Contact Breeze, Weather Panel and iLauncher installed in Storage memory.

Thanks for your help.

Nick

Correct. Be aware that if you move the slider over too much WM will just put it back in the middle. So move it incrementally until you find the position that 'sticks'.

Have a look at this thread as a good 'primer' for memory (it is about Axims - but the only difference is they call the Filestore 'Built in Storage' or BIS):

With regard to where to install programmes have a look at my MyPDA (ignore the PI bit though as that is built into your ROM and if you apply updates they need to be in main memory to work).

You're bang on. However, couple points. Don't assume that the program memory is released after closing a program, I soft reset about 5 times a day just to clean it out. Also, if you don't have a program that actually "closes" the program when you hit the "x", the program will still remain running in the background.

Also, I run PB & CB from my File Store and they work fine, thereby freeing up more main memory.

I suggest you to keep your root directory of your IPAQ as empty as possible. Recently I noticed that my pocket dictionary has just put this vocabulary file of 20 MB in the root. After I moved it to SD, my available RAM suddenly jumped to 36 MB, before it was 23 MB.

And also, even programmes like Pocket Informant, Pocket Breeze, Contact Breeze, Weather Panel could be installed into SD or CF.

Good luck,
