Turning a 4700 into a celluar phone?
Is this possible? I read somewhere that you could buy SD/CF cards from Sprint and Verizon that allow you to connect to their networks for a monthly fee, my question is this true? If so, how many service providers are there that do this? (Would like to see a Cingular IMO) And what would the monthly price be? I'd hate to go out and buy a cell phone when I could make my PDA an all-in-one device.

Thanks in advance,
Shmenge

Edit - Just as a side note, I'm aware of Skype, but I'm looking for something that I could call a house phone and not need an internet connection in order to do that. Like a cell phone. I believe someone referred to them as "Wireless 56k modems"

I'm sure there are cheaper but this is what you are looking for

All you should need is your SIM card, I have never used anything like this before so I'm not to sure.

Hi,
I have never tried this CF GSM card on my hx4700, but I saw and used a friends' hx4700 that had the Convergent Technologies' CF GSM card in it and it worked well with tmobile wireless data service at about 60k/sec. I'm trying now to setup the same setup-ordering the card this week...
Looked to me like it worked well. The url above is the right reference last I checked...

Verify your 1.10 ROM hx470x does NOT have the battery-crippling failure.. see http://www.ipaqhq.com/forums/showthr...2&page=6&pp=25 for details...

I have to wonder how the card handles getting calls when the handheld isn't turned on. It seems awfully expensive if it doesn't maintain the full convenience of a regular cell phone.

I might be able to see someone paying that much money for the added convenience of having just one device, but paying that much money to trade one inconvenience for an even bigger one.... not likely.

yeah really I was thinking the same thing, dear lord thats expensive considering I could pick up a tmobile cell phone for about 30 dollars a month phone included, unless of course you can buy this device and dont need to pay TMobile monthly, then I could see why the price is so high :P

Enfora CF Phone Card
Hi ShmengeTravel,

Have a look at the following link...

http://www.mobiletechreview.com/tips...SM_CF_card.htm
and www.enfora.com

I bought one here in Singapore from a local distributor for just under 400 SGD. I am still in the process of evaluating it so I can't give a detailed review on it yet.
Firstly it's expensive....it's a nice unit, about the same size as a CF Gps mounted card with an extendable aerial. The phone side of it worked out of the box BUT in order to receive calls the software has to be running!!

I didn't buy it primarilly as a phone (emergency only), more to be able to access the internet etc when no wi fi hot spots are around. I had a problem with the gprs set up because the sim card "pin code" was somehow blocking the dial in gprs system. Once I removed the code, took a long time to discover this, it functioned well.

Is it worth it ? The jury is still out! It's nice to have the possibility of internet access, but as a stand alone phone (software has to be on to receive) I'm not so sure, although maybe other systems don't have this drawback.

Regards
