Hot weather and major catastrophe...
Hi,

I was following the refrigerator thread but the heat problem is very serious. Actually we have 37-38 degrees Celsius at Bordeaux and my 4700 became very unstable... This noon, I was listening to music with my 4700 while driving. At the arival point I wanted to stop the iPAQ but it was unresponding and very hot. I have tried to soft reset it but it was unable to restart: the SR gave a white screen without going to the password screen. After some pushes on the SR button, it became completely unresponsive and I had to take out the battery to shut it down. It was unusable for a full hour, until I came home and was able to leave it alone in a shady room. When I restarted it later, I had a hard reset. Fortunately I do a full automatic backup every night at 2 o'clock...

Does your iPAQ become unstable as this when the weather is getting hot (outside, when you do not habe air conditioning) or mine is flaky?

Regards,

Murat

PS. I have not yet installed the ROM upgrade and I prefer to wait the 2005 update if any...

So far, I have not had any problems with the heat with my hx4705. We've gotten pretty hot here this year, and haven't had any problems. Now, I haven't tried extensively to use it in the hot weather, but so far it seems to be doing pretty good in the heat.

Oooh you rat, yousure know how to make someone jealous eh! I have been fortunate enough to have visited the SCal deserts on several occasions - and I gotta admit - they are fantastic... simply breathtaking.

On one trip I drove from San Diego, to Palm Springs, to Baker, to Grand Canyon, to Death Valley and back to Palm Springs.... was an awesome trip and I'd love to do it again.

For those who haven't been there, the deserts of the SW USA are an outstanding place to visit... they had a profound effect on me.

The only issue that I've run into with my own IPaq is leaving in my car, up on the dash. The fingerprint scanner (hp ipaq hx2750 model) now seems to take somewhat distorted finger scans. I've had to redo all my image scans on my fingers, and i'm really glad I use a PIN as a back up access method.

I have been in contact with the HP support. They asked me to HR the iPAQ and to reproduce the problem. Well, this is the standard protocole, I imagine but I do not see how we will be able to systematize a random error...

Murat

This is another testimonial for the HX4700 working well under hot weather conditions. I have used the HX4700 outside with bluetooth on in 30 Celsius plus weather.

I use the hx4700 to keep my golf score with a bluetooth GPS for yardages. I golf 36 holes consecutive holes (two games) in a day so the hx4700 is on for 9.5 hours continuously with no problems. I set the hx4700 to not turn off after any specific time period as it would loose the GPS connection and take too long to reconnect just to check a yardage.

I have been most impressed with my hx4700 and the Mugen extended battery in sun light, heavy-use, hot conditions.

Hmmm...2.5 hours to Las Vegas...1.5 hours to Los Angeles...1 hour to San Bernardino...1 Hour to Tehachipi....

The only thing bad is the price of Gas, and the distance I have to travel...

To follow up to the heat issue.

It is continuing to be very hot at Bordeaux (38°C today). I have remarked that if I charge my ipaq using the adaptator (the originally or the boxwave type mini-cable to plug adaptator), it hangs after some hours. If I charge it using the USB port only, it does not hang. In fact, its back (the battery side) becomes hotter if I use the direct connection, in comparison with the USB connection.

Any idea (except telling me not to use the direct charging )?

If it's any concellation, I've just been experiencing the same problem in the UK. High 20's outside the car, so hot behind the windscreen. If I let the 4700 run on battery power it's fine, but when I plug my 12v-5v(USB) adapter in, it very quickly cooks and just freezes. Just like the original post, I need to leave it to cool down before it will SR properly. Since I've noticed this, charging over my mini-sync cable seems to take ages and I haven't been able to get the LiIon battery full even after an overnight charge...

Today, as a trial, I did a HR before the journey, re-installed TomTom (and nothing else) and set of. Half an hour and it was cooked. I pulled over and restored my backup from last night and ran for an hour or so on batteries without any problem. I came on here looking for overheating threads before phoning HP.

This seems to have been since the 1.10 rom upgrade, but it could just be coincidence. I might try downgrade and see if that helps.

Dox.

Same thing here when I use mt Akron mobile mount, the other day it got real hot to the touch, also only started seeing this with the new rom.
