Avantgo problem
I just did a hard reset and installed Avantgo (the latest version 5.7 build 35) and now Avantgo is super slow! I installed it in the huge ipaq filestore, and before it was installed in main memory. I wanted to use my filestore but this is really slow and not convenient. Can anyone make a recommendation on how to get it faster?

Unfortunately you have to install it to main memory...but even if you do the trick that moves the files to IFS, SD or CF card it will get slow again. This is why I haven't used it in a while. Well...that and the way it's setup. I would rather it be a seperate program like it used to be on Palm. That was great!

AvantGo is a pretty good idea, that in my opinion has outgrown itself. AvantGo allows you to select 'channels' (or webpages) that you can have downloaded to your PPC. You can then browse your selected pages or channels, at your convenience, without being connected to anything. The pages are actually saved locally, and are updated at a schedule you select. You can sync your PPC and update it like every 4 hours. You can read news pages like The New York Times.

Now these are condensed versions of most web pages. If you want to read the whole in depth article, it will require you to connect somehow. The out of date pages are deleted, and fresh content is delivered at your synching schedule.

I feel that it has gotten too big, and the major complaint I had when using it was it is so damned slow updating my content. It takes up a lot of space for the files also. You can trick it into storing these files on an SD card, but that slows it down even more.

Others might have differing opinions, and I used to love it, before the last software update, and haven't used it since.

That pretty much sums it up. Before when most PDA owners didn't have any connection options other than the cradle sitting next to their computer, it was the only way to go. Now, why would I want to look at a possibly outdated page when I can connect and look at the same page possibly updated several times since I ate breakfast and left for work. (I never really have a stomach for food when I first get up, but it just sounded nice written like that.)

If it was converted to a full feature browser and had some of the nasty bugs, that crept in when screen resolutions went up, removed, I think it could even make a big comeback, as there are still some times when a connection is not possible. Perhaps they could totally revamp the sync process so that it would occur in the background, while you would still be able to browse pages.

Seems like we are members of a GROWING number of EX AvantGo Users Club.

It used to be GHREAT when I had my Palm and they had the "Joke a Day." Then I went to wm2002 (old ipaq1945) and they were integrated w/ PIE. That was the worst thing they could do. The pictures look like Junk and it's slow as....well....nevermind. LOL

Installed it once, had little local content for me (Australia), uninstalled it a few days later after frustratingly waiting an age for updates, and saved a heap of precious memory space to boot. Definately no regrets!!

You mean there is life after dialup?? After our promised tax cuts next month, there may be enough leftover for broadband!!! May stop my wife complaining whenever there are three of us attempting a download simultaniously via our wireless network at home, 46Kbps divided by three (or four if the 4700 is on line as well) tends to be a bit slow.

Hello friends,
well, in deed, it´s terrible slow; but that does´t matter imho, as avantgo is an offline reader. I use to connect and start avantgo in the morning after having gotten up. Then it uses to be ready when I have my coffee. And I use to read it when I am at work and have my break at 12 o´clock - and NO internet access. Really good this way :-).
I must confess: I like AvantGo!
Kind regards from
Axolotl

Sounds like you use it the same way I do.

I read the paper (Sydney Morning Herald for those of you in Australia) on my commute to work after picking my unit out of its cradle each morning

I catch-up on all the sport and news from overnight in the UK as I have the BBC News and Sport as channels and I have The Times if I want a bit of more 'in-depth' coverage

All available to me on my bus trip to work - where there is definitely no wifi access all this whilst listening to music with betaplayer.

It probably helps me that all I have to do is pick my unit out of its cradle as a sync/ avantgo update occurs just after 6:30am - which is when Sprite reboots my unit following my scheduled daily back-up
