Using a headset 3mm plug, etc.?
What do I need to add to my HX4700 so I can attach this headset I have that has a microphone and speaker? It is only a mono speaker, but I'd like to have this set up so I can use it when I call someone on Skype. Do I need a mm converter? I remember hearing something about those. Where can I find them? Thanks!

I didn't know that the headphone jack had mic-in input?!

Yes, it does I'm pretty sure. You just have to get the converter that makes the 3mm plug into a 2mm plug that also has a microphone. I think if you get a special headset with 4 connectors on it, you can still use the standard 3mm plug, but I have one with a 2mm plug and I'd like to use it.

GeekyGuy is right, the headphone jack is just that, a headphone jack. The 3.5mm plug has 3 segments, right and left channels and common. There is no connection to the mic input on the 4700, so no amount of adaptors or converters can change that, no matter how hard you try!!

but I am 99% positive that with a converter, you can do this. In fact, I think I got an answer once before on another site, but I forget what I needed to go. I'll check it out more.

The jack can be adapted, but physically requires a different hardware jack to be installed.
Not adapted with "plug adapters".

How dare you basically call me an idiot! I kept saying I know this thing exists, and I did find it! Here is a link! I should have just looked myself, but I thought I could get some fast help:

No one is calling anyone an idiot, and I for one am open to being corrected. However, the specifications for the 4700 are, quote, 'Integrated microphone, speaker, 3.5 mm stereo audio/headset jack'. Clearly no mention of the ability to access the mic through the audio socket. My laptop and two other desktop computers all have a separate mic imput, as do the three headsets with separate mic/headphone jacks. Your link is the first I have seen of this type of arrangement in 3.5mm(and I am no stranger to audio devices and I/O), though there are units used by pilots using a 6mm jack. I eagerly await your feedback as to how it is set up if you get it, and how well it works. Great that HP gives these extras with no mention in their specs.

Here is a headset 'specifically designed for iPAQs' - http://plantronics.com/north_america...ll/prod5140005. In my thread here - http://www.ipaqhq.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18882 I asked if somebody tried this headset but have no reply yet.
Thus there is no doubt that four-contact jacks are compatible with 4700 and headsets with microphones can be used.
I wonder if somebody tried to use an ordinary headset for cell phones (some of them have the same four-contact jacks).
Thanks

Egad!! I'm having to eat some crow today. My Nokia 6600 handsfree has a 2mm plug, with, dare I say it, four segments!!! Didn't even look at it before. Must be a 2/3.5mm adaptor available somewhere, will look tomorrow in a local electronics supplier. If there is, will try the handsfree to see if it works. Hopefully I will then have at least two things compatable in my armoury of electronic devices. Thanks Benn600, love a technical challenge and or (friendly) argument.

lol--I don't want to pay $10 for a little adapter and I also don't want to buy from a company I don't know. Does anyone know if this same adapter, which does exist, is available on Buy.com or another big store? I know that when the 3.5mm plug on the HX4700 is converted to 2.5mm, it does have four connectors and therefore, you are able to have an external microphone, and this would make my skype calls much better. I have a question: can I use those very common BT earphones w/mic? This wouldn't even use the plug, but I just ordered the HP BT headphones and by getting an adapter, I am going back a step. Staying wireless is always 'enjoyable.'

When I had an e750 I found an adapter at Radioshack that worked, I'll dig the thing up and see if it works with the Ipaq, if it does I'll also try and find the part # for it. I'll try and do it today if my kids will leave me alone long enough.

I would be happy just to find an adapter that would take my 2.5 Jabra up to 3.5 for the 4700.

Have been following this thread not thinking it would be an issue for my proporta earphones that I had for my iPAQ 1940 but have just tried them and guess what yes they are 2.5mm so rattlle in the jack. If you find out where you can get a 2.5 - 3.5 adaptor in the UK and also one which has the four contacts would be grateful.

I looked at Radio shack and the convertors from 2.5 to 3.5 only had 2 contacts. As the 4700 has 3 I'm not sure if that would even work for headphones only.

Maybe someone can stop by an point us in the right direction here.
