Another Mac guy to the rescue....
Activesync will install. It just takes longer than on a real PC for some reason. Run the installer and then leave it alone, even when it looks like it's locked up. It might take half the night to finish installing, but it will. Once it is installed there are no performance issues.
If you panicked like I did the first time you tried to install and aborted the installer then it may even take longer for the installer to complete. Let it run over night, if need be and don't worry if the installer screen looks like the program has frozen.
If you search the forums carefully enough, you should find verification that this is the case. I have been using Activesync 3.8 on a G5 Powermac for a couple months now. I totally gave up on getting Missing Sync to work as it doesn't handle categories properly.
The problem with categories comes from some programs/devices not recognizing categories, some recognizing categories but only allowing one at a time, and some allowing multiple categories. As a result, categories are ignored during syncing and can get mixed up when using Missing Sync.
Some other important stuff you should know:
If you decide to apply the update and you have Missing Sync installed, it could interrupt the process and turn your IPAQ into a paperweight. Make sure you uninstall Missing Sync before attempting the update.
There is an issue with the update that turns extended batteries into really big standard batteries. If you have an extended battery do not apply the update, it's not worth losing your extended battery over. If you do apply the update and then use your extended battery, even when you revert, the battery still only has half the capacity it should have. The only way to get full capacity is to replace it with an extended battery that has not been "exposed" to the new ROM.
In either case, you should still install Activesync as you will need it to install programs. I suggest you also use it to sync to Outlook as this will back up your data more accurately, for example, maintaining appointment categories. Activesync, will work better than Missing Sync, but remember, it's Microsoft, which means that the defaults are quite often not set to what they should be for practically anyone who uses it. For example, Activesync can do a back up of your entire RAM, just like Palm Desktop does, but unlike Palm Desktop, the default is not to do this automatically. You need to select the back-up menu and turn it on. Some of the "conduits" that you would take for granted as being turned on might also not be turned on, so look really carefully at all the preferences to make sure they are set the way you want.
