Force VGA Mode...???
I have read in several threads referring to different applications comments such as... "especially in VGA Mode"...!!!

Am I missing something here...? I have an HX4700 - do I need to force VGA mode or do I need to turn it on somehow? Or is VGA mode on by default.

Any advice appreciated, thanks.

the 4700 runs in a soft of 'dual' mode. navigating the device is in a qvga pixel-doubling mode, and any non-vga apps do the same.

if the app is vga, then it runs in vga mode...like the game atomic cannon.

there are apps...se_vga or oz_vga that will force it into true vga mode, but i've never liked them...some do.

Simply put; it quadruples your screen content space (easy reading/browsing) to a whopping 480x640, the downside is very small fonts. I have it running on VGA using SE_VGA and I love it but I meet a lot of people that can't even read my today screen.

Most aplications are written for 240x320, so it is possible that your games/appz don't work on it properly, most common problems are the screen only used in the upper left quarter or full screen visuals but touchpad cooridiantes being locked to that same upper left quarter (impossible to navigate through the screen easily)

Just try it out, you can easily reverse it....

I've used ozVGA to "force VGA mode" from day 1 with my 4700. Once you tweak it it work the way you want (i.e. fiddle with the fonts sizes in various applications) it is impossible to go VGA to hum-drum old qVGA.

down side is that some applications (esp. games, atomic canon being the most notable exception) will not work at all in true VGA.

Well worth it to me, since I mostly use my iPaq as a document reader.

I find a lot of helpful information over at AximSite. Here are the specific threads that I found helpful:

understanding "true" VGA, in particular using OzVGA
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=70663

tweaking PI Informant in "true" VGA Mode using OzVGA
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showt...t=58471&page=4

Of course, there are these beautiful today themes in "true" VGA mode over at pocketparadise
http://www.pocketpcparadise.com/page...wm2003_vga.htm

Cheers

look in the x50v forums over @ aximsite...most good quality apps are already vga compatible...ie wm2003 doesnt have to pixel-double the information.

Wow, great link thanks Driftless. Is there a way to increase the font size used if in vga mode too? Though I love that mode the fonts are very small.!!

start>settings>system>screen. tap the size tab and increase/decrease your fonts.

you can also do the same for PIE.

i had a quick go with the force 480x640 in vga mode thing and its very impressive and i would quite happilly keep it that way as long as all my games worked. Of the 26 on there i would hazard a guess at:
atomic cannon 2.0
bejeweled 2
worm world party (possibly)
sky force (possibly)
look to be the only vga compatible games on there so that would mean i have to change back and forth to play my other games properly so its not the right mode for me. It would be great if the res could revert back as i load other non vga compatible games so i would be able to play propperly.

Ill defo use it for surfing the net a reading tho

those games are made to be played without vga hack software...they automatically throw the 4700 into vga mode!

But many are.... SE_VGA rocks.... I run it all the time.... Driftless is right, just up your font sizes and you'll be fine with SE_VGA (unless you have poor eyesight???). I only know of two screens that don't look so well in SE_VGA
1)the Ipaq wireless screen where you enable WiFi and B%T with the gray/green buttons
2)sometimes WMP will not display full screen video--but betaplayer gets around this.

The today screen fits a ton of info in VGA mode... wow. I can't stand the original QVGA mode anymore....
