VPN Troubles
This VPN thing would be so wonderful if I could get it working! Here is what I have done:
1. Set up an accepting VPN connection on my server
2. Set my Linksys router to allow pass through of the different types of VPNs
3. Forwarded port 500 as I heard that is the port used, but it might not be.

Now, when I am inside my network, I can connect fine using 192.168.2.2 on both my laptop and HX4700. After I leave, it is no go. What port do I need to forward to get this working? I just think that if I could forward the correct port it would work. However, I did try using a DMZ forward so that all ports were directed to the server. Has anyone else had experience with this? I'd love to get this working so I could easily access my files, printers, and other network resources at home from another location.

I am not able to VPN into my company's network with the HX4700. I am able to tunnel in with every other computer on my home network but not the HX4700. Username and password are accepted and the tunnel is open but no traffic will pass thereafter. The session seems to time out quickly. This has been my only frustration with the HX4700. I hope to find a solution to this as well.

At the very least, I want to be able to connect with my laptop. I truly don't even care about my ipaq at this point. I just want to be able to connect with my laptop. Does anyone know if I need to forward a specific port? That is what I would think I need to do.

Unfortunately, those settings didn't work. I am able to connect to my VPN with no problems at all when I use my local address, 192.168.2.2....but when I am outside my network, I have problems. I just think that certain ports need to be forwarded and it would work great. I connect inside my network perfectly in 2 seconds!

I have an idea. Try this:
1) download ZoneAlarm (or any other firewall softwares) and install it
2) restart computer
3) try VPN your server from within the network
4) there SHOULD be some popups about port access. Note down whatever ports it notifies.

that might be a long shot but it could work.

Or else grab a program called netlimiter, install it, reboot and try to access your VPN. Open netlimiter and you'll see all the ports that's currently have activities going for every program & port.

I have an idea. I was reading an article from Tom's Networking and it sounds like you have to have the router you are accessing from configured for forwarding as well. This makes sense because when you are connected, you need to be able to accept connections both ways. For example, if I connect my computer, then my network at home should be able to contact my computer if there is a request. Therefore, I probably won't even be able to use this unless I am at a friends house that lets me configure their router. A hotel or restaurant with wifi won't let me do this. FTP only requires a passive connection coming to the server. This makes sense because it seems logical. I thought it was strange how I couldn't get this working. What are your thoughts on this idea? I actually tried forwarding every port to my VPN server and making it a DMZ host so it did get everything, but it still didn't work. Thanks!

D'oh! I just remembered why it doesn't work. You were partially right when you said that you'd have to configure your friend's router for it to work. This is because of "VPN tunneling" that requires one of three protocols (PPTP,L2TP,IPsec). You can read more here: http://compnetworking.about.com/od/vpn/l/aa010701d.htm

Sorry for the wrong answers I've been giving you.

If you're looking for a professional software that allows you to do what you've told me:
"I'd love to get this working so I could easily access my files, printers, and other network resources at home from another location"
I'd highly suggest you use RemotelyAnywhere (http://www.remotelyanywhere.com). The sweet part of this software is that you can connect to your computer on your computer via your PPC via PIE. The web-based control panel accomodates for the screen size of your PocketPC. I'm not 100% sure about printing through it using your PocketPC but you can connect to your home printer via your laptop should you choose to connect it through there. Don't forget it supports SSL also. The price is a touch high for a remote administration program but I found the program to be extremely worth it.

One problem I have is that this is not worth $2 to me. At my youthful age of 17, I still am very concerned about my financial status and do not like to spend money on things unless they are very important to me. In fact, I was thinking yesterday about how I don't mind spending $94 on a 2gb compactflash card, but it bothers me a bit to pay 2 cents per minute to Skype for Skype out, which I use (I don't have a cell phone and neither do my parents). The point is that I actually can already access all my files through a complex ftp server which gives me restricted access to all my files (such as append and read only), not just my web site directory on my home server. Printer support is not mandatory and with port forwarding, I can probably get that working anyway. 2 of my printers I use are network printers anyway and I can forward their port to their IP address...plus, that is not super important. Thanks a lot for the amazing help, as you have been extremely helpful with quick responses!

This is exactly how I feel. I can spend $100 bux easily on ipaq accessories but I'm uncertain of spending the same amount on a new pair of runners.

Am I an ipaq-aholic?
