Storage Management on HP 4700?
I know there are Threads pertaining to SD & CF...and yes, I have done my searches before this post (Rob) lol and have read & re-read them - But, Im still abit confused on whats the best way I should manage my storage with the use of 2 different memory cards on my upcoming HP 4700.

In terms of storage management::

Should I even consider getting both SD & CF - Is it Highly recommended to purchase both SD & CF?

Is there much of a benfit to having both SD & CF combined in your PDA?

And If so, whats the best way to organize; Applications, GPS Maps, Games, Images, Music, Video, Doc etc on the PDA?

the main reason there are both is SD for storage, and CF for stuff like GPS, microdrives, cameras, and any other CF class 2 devices.

sorry for the short reply...no computer...just pda for typing right now...

most usually install apps to filestore, or sd card...and use cf card/microdrive for multimedia (music/movies/etc.)

try to avoid apps installing to main memory...unless they are on today menu or less than 100k in size.

Storage really comes down to personal preference and what you use you machine for. However, a good general rule is to install as little as possible to Main Memory.

You actually have 4 potential storage devices if you include the Main Memory and File Store. I don't believe both and SD and CF are needed. I put my $$$ into a 1GB CF card and I've still only filled half of it.(I don't listen to music or watch movies). Take a look at "MyPDA" to see how much I've got stored on my card.

Here's how I break down my storage:

Main Memory - Only programs that are required to be installed hrer (ie SPB Plus)
File Store - Programs that I use very regularily and need to have should I not have my CF card.
CF Card - everything else

Im wondering...if you use both SD & CF - and lets say you have all your applications on SD - and - everything else such as Files, Video etc on the CF...

Do you believe that it allows for smoother & easier performance....since you dont have both applications & high formatted files running off of 1 Memory card at the sametime - or - does it not make a difference?

Good question. I have a pretty large CF card as they are/were lots cheaper where I live than SD cards of the same size. I personally have all my programs on SD card, and on CF keep all "media" items including MP3's, photos, documents, manuals for software, eBooks, and most importantly .cab files for the programs on SD card (so if SD card goes belly up I can re-install important programs from .cab -to CF or main memory-whilst away from my PC)

I personally put apps on my SD because I just got a new digicam that uses CF and I want to be able to look at my pics without taking my CF w/programs out. I used to use, and still prefer but don't use, programs to CF because CF is generally accepted to be faster than SD. I actually changed gears a bit and started also installing apps to the Ipaq File Store and once I filled that up, I started installing apps to my SD card. Only programs that require Main Memory are installed there and I even moved some unnecessary files from Program Files on main memory, so my storage usage is about 8mb, which I think is pretty good. I didn't look what it was before the cleanup!

I think it is personal preference. Do you have other things you will use the slots for?

I have a wifi CF card, but I want all my programmes ALL the time - so I install all my programmes to an SD card - which I never take out.

I then have media files on my CF microdrive as I am unlikely to want to watch a movie whilst I am on the net

I know at least one of the moderators does it completely the other way around (ie Programmes on his CF card) because his digital camera uses SD cards and he can view them on his iPaq

It does come down to preference but there are some tidbits that lead me to how I manage my memory.

CF is generally faster then SD. This is not generally speaking of the cards themselves but the actual card buses. In that regard I usually have my multimedia files (song files and video) on the CF card. I use my SD card for applications, data and GPS maps.

I rarely install anything to main memory unless it is required (today screen plugins for example). My iPAQ File Store is also used for apps and data.

The way I look at it, data, such as music and movies, doesn't require a really fast data rate to play well, but I like apps to start quickly. However, I switched to SD and even IFS (to use it up--since I hate using it for other things) because (as I said ealier), my new digicam takes CF and I want to view my pictures with my programs still in. With them installed to CF, I'd love Resco Photo Viewere when I took my CF out, for example.
