Is there Pocket Internet Explore update for Pocket PC 2003 available for iPAQ hx4700?
Hi, I hope that I am asking the right question here. I am guessing that my iPAQ hx4700 with the original ROM (version 1) and Pocket PC 2003 Premium (with iPAQ hx4700 purchase) needs a Pocket Internet Explore update to access the basic Yahoo mail. I got this idea from seeing the Yahoo mail page's prompted message like "... need to upgrade Internet Explore..." while I was using Panera Bread Restaurant's free WiFi hotspot. I am not able to use iPAQ's WIFI to access Yahoo's mail box.

I am wonderring where I may get the information on how to identify my Internet Explore's version installed on the iPAQ hx4700 and where I can find the update download, if available. And I also appreciate about whether the Pocket Internet Explore update (or upgrade) is safe to installed. I do feel a little lucky for not installing the ROM update yet.

I did a little search at Microsoft's web site, this iPAQ forum, and Google, but I could not get the answer.

I appreciate your information.

Hi lirenchan. What you need is Tweaks2k2 (there's a link in my View MyPDA section). It will allow you to modify your regeistry so that web sites will see you as IE5/6. That way, you will be able to use your Yahoo mail. Tweaks2k2 has a trial version you can use. Test it out. If you like it, that tweak alone is worth the price.

I think that you can also by-pass that problem by using:

http://wap.oa.yahoo.com

Cheers

Is it safe to type in my Yahoo ID & password on the web page?

Hi, Thank you for this great tip for this bypass. However, that page seems to want me to enter a Yahoo ID and its password; I am concerned about that my ID and password might be collected if I enter it. It seems not a secured page (http vs https.)

Am I too careful? Thanks.

Hi, Is the Internet Explore originally installed on iPAQ hx4700 or in the original Windows Pocket PC 2003 Premium version 4? If it is version 4, are there higher versions upgrade installed? Microsoft's Internet Explore 6 SP1 seems not including Windows PPC 2003 as a compatible OS. Thanks for the information you might provide.

Hi lirenchan. Tweaks2k2 doesn't actually install IE6 onto your device. It only makes a change in the registry that makes PIE report itself as IE6 to the websites when you connect to them.

Hi, Thanks again. I don't have the confidence in starting changing the Registry at this moment and I probably would not be good at the OS technical field. Would there be any potential complications from making PIE report itself as IE6 while it actually is IE4? Are there PIE 5 or 6 available? Thank you for your time.

Programs like tweaks2k2 take the technical know how out of the equation. It has a menu driven, easy user interface that allows you to change the registry. The only thing that can be a slight negative (for some anyway) is that you will get the full web page when you visit sites rather than the ones formatted for mobile devices - meaning you will have to scroll around the page to see all of it. One advantage to that however is, should you decide to use one of the programs that lets you change your display to true VGA (640x480), you can get the entire page on one screen. Keep in mind, with a program like tweaks2k2, you can change back and forth easily whenever you like.

lirenchan; the yahoo wap site is safe however you cannot up or download attachments. It is very quick and handy for checking mails.

To enter the main Yahoo mailserver, after logging on, click the option to 'Switch back to the version supported by your current browser'. It is a bit slower but works when needed.
