hx4700 Memory Questions
Could someone please take the time to explain the memory in the hx4700 to me, or memory in general for that matter?
I guess I need to know again ROM vs. RAM, which stays and which goes away without power. What is SD RAM, Strata ROM?

I know the 4700 has 192MB total (128 Strata ROM + 64 SDRAM), that adds up in my book. Now here's the problem - - 135 MB user available memory that includes 80MB Ipaq File Store. Well 135 - 80 = 55 MB, where did that come from?

thanks,
Roberto48

Very simple. The 128mb ROM is untouchable, it is where the main operating system and all of the programs that are stored in ROM are kept. Is all 128mb used, my guess is not. But the entire 128mb is off limits to the user. The main system memory is 64mb of ram, of which about 55 mb is available to the user. The missing memory is used for program functions and operations. The iPaq file is 80mb set aside for the user to use as they please. Think of it as an internal SD card. I use it for apps that I don't want to put on an SD or CF card. So 80mb + 55mb = 135mb available to the user.

yeap

view it this way. there's 2 type of memory in hp4700. the temporary memory and the permanent memory

the temporary memory i.e. the 64mb chunk, gets erased when u do a hard-reset on ur hp4700 while the permanent memory is not.

The permanent memory is where ur FileStore and ROM stuff are. The ROM stuff cannot be deleted away and in this area, it's where ur OS and 'restoration state' of ur iPaq when u hard reset.

The temporary memory is where u normally install ur apps to as well as the memory that is used when you run an application.

Now, you might ask, why would i wanna install app to my temporary memory then when there's so little of them and it gets wipe out when I hard reset. The answer is simple. Speed. The temporary memory (theoritically) runs faster then the permanent memory. However, I for one, install most of my apps to the FileStore and for me, i dun feel the diff. It's up to u really.

hope that gives u a clearer view of ur memory structure of ur hp4700.

Have a look at this thread as a good 'primer' for memory (it is about Axims - but the only difference is they call the Filestore 'Built in Storage' or BIS):
