Hi Howard Roark. The original ROM was posted on the HP website with the updated ROM. I haven't checked recently though. You use the same procedure to load the original ROM as you did the upgrade, except you use the original file.

I think you will find that the 'English' version of the original ROM is no longer available from that site. You will have to get it from the Compaq ftp site here.
I can not remember the file number but it's on that page somewhere.

No can't find it there.

Understandable as HP's sabotage of our 4700s would not be complete without removal of the original ROM file....but only those wanting English. Who says HP doesnt have a sense of humour

It's there Howard, cleverly hidden about halfway down the list. Downloaded it myself today just in case it is removed forever. Haven't up(??)graded to 1.1 as 1.0 is working fine for me, and don't want any hassles. Look for SP29741, at about 25M in size, and there is a text d/l right next to it for install directions. Hope this helps.

Many thanks Bill, I looked for about an hour this morning but I guess I was half asleep. And congrats on *not* upgrading your 4700 and ruining an expensive extended battery like I did. Not only did it whack the extended batteries, normal usage consumes power at a noticeable rate especially the wi-fi. Gives it that retro feel of PDAs with 1-2 hours of usable life.

No restrictions as far as I can tell. I use Firefox with cookies turned off and it works fine for me

Running Firefox as well (Wouldn't it be great if there was a PPC version of Firefox? Would ditch IE in a second, just like on the PC) and had no problems accessing the site. Some warnings did come up, can't remember exactly what they were (who ever does?) but clicked past them and had no problems with the D/L.

Hopefully sometime soon there will be a FF for PPC. Personally I do very little browsing using my 4700 as I am usually out and about with it so it is not a great problem.

As for the downloading from the ftp site I have just tried again and did not get any warnings so I don't know what's going on there

Welcome to the wonderful world of Fire Fox

Now all you have got to do is download and install the hundreds of extensions that are available to make using FF an even better experience. My personal preferences are:
Addblock - blocks adds
Tabbbrowser Preferences - settings manager for tabbed browsing
PrefBar - easy access to popups, cookies etc.
Spellbound - spell checker

Actually, there is a PPC version of FireFox (well, Mozilla...) but it sucks, as it's a very early version and is buggy.
