MS Reader activation Q's
Just gave the beast a hard reset to clean everything up after deciding which applications etc. to keep, not using backup/restore. Installed everything to IFS and all run ok for me, except MS Reader. It installed an icon in 'Programs', but was a dead one (ie, named, but not recognised icon), and I have to load from IFS folder, all free ebooks load ok except for one protected one, so went to website to activate. Synced, and started activation, but website stopped activation and said I had wrong OS, and would only work on 2002 or newer!! Had it working before hard reset, so what gives?? Tried remove/reinstall to no avail.
Bill.......?;-)

airhead,

Diane Dumas, New Products Editor from Pocket PC Magazine (www.ppcmag.com), has shown a procedure to make MS Reader work in IFS, with a few modifications:

1. Copy all the .TTF files in MS Reader directory from IFS to Windows\Fonts
2. Soft reset the pocket pc
3. Create a shortcut of MSReader.exe and move the shortcut to Windows\Startmenu

This may help.

Good luck.

I haven't tried what was suggested by Diane Dumas, but just so you know, I had the same problem you did. Then I couldn't activate the reader over the internet either when installed in the IFS. So, I installed to main memory.

Bill,
If you have a full backup of your device prior to the hard reset you can restore only the files needed to reactivate Microsoft Reader.
The files are as follows:

In the root directory of the device:
LitPath.lpt

In the \Windows directory (or \Windows\AppMgr):
secrep.dat
secrep.dll
secrep.xlm
secrepid.dat
Microsoft Activation.unload

Just restore these files, do a soft reset, and your Microsoft Reader should show it is activated again.

I've even created a folder on my SD Card with these files in it, and in case of a hard reset, I just copy them back and all is well.

EDIT: Thanks for this hack goes to CTitanic and this post on his site

It feels like the problem is not with activation, but installation.

Ye gads, it's one thing after another!! Moved .tff files to windows/fonts, and created shortcut for start menu, all worked fine. However, still wouldn't activate, saying I had older version of OS. Uninstalled to install on main memory and follow Geekyguy's directs, only now will only install to IFS. Uninstall and clean up registry to remove all trace and try again, same thing, select main memory, default location, whatever, still loads to IFS. Have uninstalled/installed (all with reg clean, also uninstall/install on PC) 6 time and can't make it install to main so I can activate it. Help please, what small thing am I overlooking, I'm no dummy when it comes to PC, but this thing seems to have got the idea into its chip that from now on, IFS is the only place to go, simply because most all my previous installs have been there.

Bill,

Sorry to hear this incident.

Could you please try the last thing I can think of:

1. Remove MS Reader from Pocket PC
2. Hook the 4700 to the PC to fire up ActiveSync
3. In ActiveSync, Click on Tools -> Add/Remove Programs
4. Select "MS Reader" and click on the button on the interface to "Remove in both locations"
5. Soft reset the pocket pc and try to install it again to main memory.

Good luck.

Paul,
Thanks for all the tips. Worked a treat, installed on the main and is now activated. Can read my 'Bryson's Dictionary of Troublesome Words'. Will follow 'GeekyGuy,s' directs to hold onto activation, and move to IFS. Don't really need to, as main is using only 4.9Mb at this time, but that's not the point I suppose......is it?

Just removed it and reinstalled it in IFS. Provided SECREP files have not been deleted, the Reader in IFS is now activated and been installed in IFS not occupying main mermory.
