Hp 4700 - Needed Web Service?
I want to use my HP 4700 to access the Web with my Cell phone.

The cell phone provider I will be using is called, Metro PCS.

The phone i will be using is a - Nokia 6225i (Bluetooth - CDMA phone) which technically is compatible to have access to the internet. The problem is my cell phone provider, does not offer a 'Data Service Plan' - like Cingular, T-moblie etc. To grant access to the Internet for a monthly fee.

what I want to know is:::

- Does my Cell phone provider, need to have a 'Web Service Plan'; like T-Moblie...in order to allow me access to the Internet on my PDA?

- Can I use my Cell phone with PDA to access the Web for Free?

- Does using your Cell phone to access the Web on your PDA, waste your Minutes?

Any type of insight, will be greatly appreciated.

With my service provider, the Data Package allows me to access the web in the digital service areas for a fee based on the total amount of data transmitted/received. But in areas where the digital service isn't available use my phone like a regular dial modem and use the 1-800 dial-up service from my Internet Service Provider. The data package is cheaper and faster. The dial-up package uses up the minutes on my cell service.

I've never found any free internet on cell services. In fact nothing is free on cell service is it? The only way to get free internet service is to find a "hot spot" or open WIFI connection. A lot of hotels have this and some coffee shops and restaurants. In fact in a small town here in Ontario, the local Liquor Store (LCBO) has been advertising free WIFI internet. So when traveling the Trans Canada Highway between Ottawa and Toronto Free WIFI Internet is available for the power traveller I guess. Either that or the local residents are connecting for free.?

I'm not familiar with using a cell phone but if you "Google" WiFi Hotspots you will fin sites that list places with free and pay to connect wireless hotspots and you can check your area. There will be sites that aren't listed as well. When you're out having a coffee or whatever you can pull out the 4700 and see if you can get connected. I've found a couple of good spots in Victoria that have free wireless.

Well then you could use your phone as a Dial-Up connection and that's probably your only choice.. There are several downsides such as slow speed, and uses minutes.

The service I plan on using has Unlimited Local & Unlimited Long Distance Calls (Metro PCS) .... Does this then mean I can be online with my PDA, as long as I want without any worries?

Again, my cell phone provider has no 'Web Service Plan' like Cingular, Verizon, T-moblie etc.......So considering I have Unlimited Minutes, does this mean I can have access to the Internet on my PDA for Free?

What you are trying to do is called tethering or Bluetooth DUN. In order to accomplish this you need a phone that supports BT DUN and can send/receive data through your cellular service provider.

I don't know much about Metro PCS or your phone model. Your best bet is to contact Metro PCS and ask them about data. Another good source of information on this stuff is HowardForums. You will find a ton if info over there. Including how-to-guides on tethering your BT phone and pda.

Well, I know for a fact that Metro PCS does not offer a 'Web Service Plan' -- They offer me Unlimited Everything; such as Minutes, Txt messaging & sending pictures to email accounts, but no 'Data Plan' to acces the Internet with your phone.

The phone I was getting is a Nokia 6225i (CDMA) which has Bluetooth..not sure about Bluetooth DUN..but it has Bluetooth, i know.

I just want to make sure it will work, before i feel a need to purchase a $220 Bluetooth Phone.

Hi Dragon,

I think you're gonna hear a lot of "it _should_ work," but not that much first-hand experience. Like this from me: I used to use Bluetooth to get my laptop to connect to my Nokia phone; the laptop's modem would dial out on the Nokia to the dial-in number for my university's internet access; and everything worked fine, if slowly. So, "it _should_ work" just the same with your iPaq and your phone.

Just expect the connection to seem very very slow. (That's why you won't find too much first-hand experience with the setup you're proposing. Most people want faster service, and either go to WiFi hotspots or have signed up for GPRS service on their cell phones.) Since you've got unlimited long distance, the slowness won't cost you extra money. (I had unlimited nights, and did all my dial-in after 9 p.m.) You will need to have a dial-in number for internet access from your ISP. Since you're not paying extra for long-distance, it doesn't have to be a national number; a number local to your ISP will work from anywhere.

I hope this is of some use--in practice, too, and not just in theory.

Thanks for that repy based on your experience. I mainly thinking of my connection with my PDA online for staying connected through AOL,MSN messengers....Do u happen to know if the 'Slow' speed will affect & be noticable with just basic messaging?

And also..in terms of slowness..i know anything less than DSL speed seems like its forever...but under the circumstances, is the slowness to the point that its not even worth it?

So you'd have an AOL number you could dial in to? Good.

I think for just text the speed would be acceptable.

Good luck.
