Creative solution to accessing our corporate network with my HX4705...
Hello all,

In a recent thread regarding VPN trouble I mentioned that, when I approached them for assistance, my IT department had no idea what a Pocket PC was and refused to assist in setting up VPN access to the corporate network (though I now know of several executives who have been given just such support).

Today I bought a USB Bluetooth adapter for my laptop, installed it on my company provided laptop, and set up internet sharing between the VPN client and the Bluetooth networking. Now my PPC is on the corporate network as an extension of my company laptop. How cool is that?!

Though familiar with the technology this is my first real world application for Bluetooth. It made a nice first impression

It is funny how those IT guys know how to keep those they want to happy don't they. Glad you were able to find a solution that worked for you.

For the benefit of the ones who would be interested to do the same, can you please detail how you did it? Thanks in advance

Certainly.

I first installed a USB Bluetooth adapter on my company provided laptop as per the instructions included with the adapter and paired my laptop and iPAQ. I then used the Bluetooth setup wizard to install the 'Network Access' service. I right-clicked on this service (in 'my Bluetooth places/my device') and selected 'properties'. From the drop-down menu I selected 'Allow other devices to access the Internet/LAN via this computer' and clicked 'OK'.

Then I opened the 'Network Connections' panel in WinXP's Control Panel. Then I right-clicked on the 'VPN' client, selected 'properties' from the menu, and then selected the 'Advanced' tab at the far right of the VPN Properties dialog window. Then I checked the option 'Allow other network users to connect through this users Internet connection'. Then I selected 'Bluetooth Network' from the drop-down menu and clicked the 'OK' button.

Finally, I activated Bluetooth on my HX4705 and opened the Bluetooth manager. I then clicked 'New', selected 'Connect to a network', and followed the instructions selecting my laptop as the device providing the sevice.

In a perfect world that's how it's done anyway. There are many variables that might alter the required process. I hope this helps!

This post was made from my HX4705 via a Bluetooth connection to my company laptop and internet sharing linked to the VPN client which is connected through a Sprint CDMA network connection - all while I sit a couple hundred feet from my car (containing my laptop) on a motor vehicle ferry crossing the Puget Sound. I'm jazzed!

I gotta admit, that's a pretty slick idea. I like it. Might actually get me off my arse to go buy a blue tooth adapter as well, since I have continual issues with our access point, and no acceptable resolution to it.

I bought a USB wi-fi adapter, and do something similar. See the USB adapter here.

Very cool! How far from the USB WiFi adapter can you be and still connect?

One of the drawbacks I've noticed to doing this is slower tranfer rates using Bluetooth. The extra battery time because bluetooth uses less power makes up for this a little though.

Damn, I bet there are no Macintosh drivers for that USB2 to Wi-Fi adaptor. There never are.

Tempting as well. I'm not a big fan of peer-to-peer wireless though, but that's a very interesting idea as well...

Hmmmm...

Sorry for not getting back to this sooner. I've not tested any distance with the USB wi-fi, since I actually have the whole house on 802.11 b/g and Gigabit wired. I bought it to use at work, but corporate policy will not allow me to set up a new network connection.

I'll set it up here in a bit, make a connection to it with the 4700 and do a little walk about. I'll post back here later today.

Edit:
I had good signal (not great) in all areas of my house, and yard. Internet access wasn't configured, I was only measuring signal strength using VMobile Network Browser. I wouldn't use it to share an internet connection with my neighbors, but it would provide network access in a pinch

I downloaded the Apani Networks VPN client and wifi-ed into the corporate Cisco 3000 concentrator. We use the RSA Securid hard tokens.
