Pretec CF Modem owners please!
Don't know just who to get info from on this, and have done a site search. I have just purchased through eBay, a Pretec CF Modem for AU$32. It plugged and played fine and I have no problems with the modem. It's the CF adapter that came with it that I am having problems with.
I was hoping to use it to plug into my laptop (Toshiba Satellite M30) as a simple access for the CF memory card I use on the 4700, instead of the dragging out the USB memory card reader. On insertion, the PC said it couldn't install it and needed a driver. The hardware install list in the control panel identifies the adapter as a 'Samsung Rev. 1.18.6'. I have tried all related sites and areas for cardbus drivers (Samsung, Toshiba, Pretec, driver download sites, google etc.) and not found a thing relevent. For those who own this thing, do you have any tips (or drivers??). It may be an ATAPI issue, as it flashed on the progress bubble when attempting to load that it was going to load the ATAPI driver, then said nogo. I am sure XP doesn't use ATAPI platform, but I may be mistaken on that one (it has occasionally been known).

I don't know this adapter, but did XP respond the same with and without a cf card in the adapter?

No response till I plugged in the cards ( both have allready been accessed by the PC through the USB card reader), one a Fujifilm, the other a Kodak. Presumed it needed an active source to start working. Have not had anything to do with PCMCIA devices before so am running blind, there being nothing I could find to help on the web. Presumed (again) would respond like USB plug'n'play. Do you think it could be a card issue instead, and the adapter is responding normally?

I have the winXP drivers for this card. They are generic drivers, and there are 2 zip files - you'll have to work out which one is most relavent, because I downloaded them a long time ago and have forgotten which is which.

PM me with you email and i'll send them over.

I don't think you can use a media card reader (like a USB CF card reader) to get the modem working, and these recognise cards as 'drives'. Cardbus should be OK though as this is an adapter. Someone correct me if im talking shit.

regards,

wackyd.

I have that exact adapter (got it with my Pretec CF modem) and have often used it successfully in the way that you are trying to use it. It has not required any drivers (other than those already included in Win2000 and XP). I've even used it with a second adapter (Memory Stick to CF) to read memory sticks in my laptop's Cardbus slot without any problems. Yours might be stuffed I reckon. You can buy generic adapters of the same type for about $15 if you shop around the net.

Yeah Simon, I think you may be right. Put it in to try the drivers I got from wackyd (thanks for your assist wackyd) and got no response at all, unlike the first time. Popped it out to to try again, and was much alarmed to find it was almost too hot to hold!! I think it fritzed, and only hope it didn't take anything with it on the laptop (all seems to be ok). So may go and buy another tomorrow, (and like you say, I've seen them for about $15) just to confirm my cardbus slot is still ok. Anyone want to buy a laptop driven hand warmer? Anyway, gotta go now and log onto eBay!! LOL
