Saving to ROM instead of RAM
Hi all, back with another question...

When I put songs on my 4700, they automatically save to RAM or at least I think this is the case. Is the main memory RAM? How do I get the files to save to the ROM, which is mostly empty? I hope I'm even asking the right questions here. Thanks again everyone.

Sorry to disappoint you, you cannot save anything in the Read Only Memory(ROM). However, you can do that in your main program memory RAM, or iPaq File Store or CF or SD card.

Just a little clarification for greendot. If you look at memory allocation you will notice main memory is divided between storage and program, with a total of apx 65mb of total ram (62.28mb on my 4700). This area of memory is where your music, pictures, programs, etc can be stored/loaded if you choose or accept the "default" location. It is also used when you run a program like word, excel just like ram on a pc. Rom is where the operating system (wm2003) resides, like your pc hard drive. Now iPAQ file store is 85mb of non volitile ram. It will not lose data in the event of a hard reset or total loss of both batteries. Unlike ram. I believe this is the memory you are referring to as almost not used. You can store almost anything you want there. Music, pictures, and most seperatly purchased programs, including iPAQ backups. SD and CF card are like large versions of file store, except they can be losr or damaged (if you abuse them).

So go ahead and experiment, have fun, you can always make backups, restore, hard reset. You won't break it, maybe your patience will get tested occasionally, but we're all here to help each other. So, keep asking questions.

What method are you using to transfer your music to your 4700?
For an example of one way I transfer files:
I open two windows by clicking on "My Computer" then I navigate in one window to the location of the files on my pc and in the other window I navigate to Pocket PC and then I drag and drop the files I want to move
When you navigate to Pocket PC you can select the location you want your files moved to such as Ipaq File Store, SD Card, CF Card etc.
If you aren't clear on Ipaq File Store or how memory works go to the left and click on "MY PDA", scroll down under Tip, Tricks & FAQ's to the entry on memory and it has a link to a great explanation!
Hope this helps and if not expand on your question.

You may want to read Memory in Pocket PC explained.

Slight correction. The iPAQ File Store is non-volatile ROM. The iPAQ File Store is the section of ROM that is remaining after the OS took up its part. The area of ROM where the OS is cannot be altered. The iPAQ File Store can and will survive a hard reset. It is not until WM5 that this will change.
