With the Solnyshok tool, I think.

Thanks, should have read your post better. Will let you know if it works.
Update: could not get the Solnyshok tool to sort my problem, but found a thread with a link to a universal bootloader, this however has restored my device, and I'm now currently updating with the new rom image.
A lot happier now.
Thanks

This brought new life to mine. I have been having problems with my touch screen and after doing the upgrade I still had problems with it working correctly. I decided to just try several clean resets and now everything is fine. I also tried to restore from my sktools backup, don't bother trying this from old backup to new firmware, caused another clean reset.
It looks like I can rely on the 4700 again.

UPDATE (07/01/2007): follow Jon's remarks HERE, in the comment section, to unbrick a Vista-bricked device. BTW, THIS is the thread he's linking.
UPDATE (07/02/2007): - You can fix the above-mentioned flashing folder problem by just disabling "Wireless" in Settings / Today / Items
- The A2DP problem has been fixed. Just download THIS (also mirrored HERE) file and install it. Original (Russian language) post HERE. It's working just GREAT with my Plantronics 590A: GREAT sound quality (as always with the Widcomm BT stack), no distortion, absolutely no problems at all (for example, excessive CPU usage). This all means that, now, the upgrade is highly recommended for A2DP users too.

Now I can say that Hx4700 just got up from the deep sleep that was for 6 months till this weekend that I just flashed the new Russian firmware. By using the highly suggested AKU 3.5.2 Standard Build 24-06-07 with the A2DP fix you have an improved device than the WM2003SE and with trully worked version of WM2005. Do not use any previous back up as the systems hangs (and this is a real answer that they have changed a lot of the original software). So they deserve a great thanks all that people that worked for that package. I have check also a lot of software and there is no problem with everything I have checked till now and especially with BTGPS and Wifi everything goes excelent. Finally I installed the very usefull free browser Minimo 0.2 Minimo project page and it worked without any problem. In the original 2.01 version of WM5 just the system could not used at all. I will keep my eye open on any further improvement of AKU and please Menmeisyys keep us informed.

UPDATE (07/03/2007):: a related thread at BrightHand with another tutorial (cross-posted HERE too); worth checking out. Also worth checking out THIS Axim/MobilitySite and THIS PPCT thread.

First of all, thanks Menneisyys for bringing this to our attention. I would never have found the kozhura thread, and I had completely given up on the WM5 update purchased last year.
I only had a small issue with the update following your instructions. My iPAQ sat for about 30 minutes yesterday with the screen saying "Cleaning Data. Please wait" (or similar) after the initial hard reset as instructed by Menneisyys.
I finally dared just a regular soft reset and it booted ok.
I agree with everyone, performance is nice so far (without measuring exactly, I perceive it similar to 2003SE), and I have loaded programs so far all into regular memory, with no tweaking at all.

Same here. When I did the final hard reset it sat forever but I was hesitant to touch anything. Finally caved in and soft reset and it booted ok. I did another hard reset about 2 minutes later and this time it was quickly followed by a reboot. All is well here, thanks Menneisyys for bringing this post to 4700 owners.

Hi,
I have read the thread about the Axim Roms from a Russian forum and then I see this thread and I am confused.
I am not seeing the difference on this thread staying open closing the Axim threads.
My thought is a hacked legal rom makes the release of the hacked rom illegal and discussion of it a rather gray area.
Is there a difference between HP and dell with the discussion of hacked roms?
I own an Axim and was certainly interested in the reading of the closed threads but, understandably, the administration has felt this inappropriate and closed them.
O.K. I understand this but there is a double standard with this thread staying open as there was nothing going in the dell threads that is not discussed here or linked to.
Sorry for this being my first post and it being such as this but if this thread staays open, I think, in fairness, the Dell threads should stay open as well.
David
