UPDATE (04/14/2008):

1. OllieD has uploaded his full hack HERE (see discussion HERE). You might want to give it a try if you are absolutely sure your phone / PDA hardware supports SDHC and don’t want to upgrade to a cooked, already SDHC-compatible ROM. It MIGHT work.

2. Note that the ROM’s I’ve reviewed are just one of the many available. For example, for the x51v, Lenny’s ROM is also excellent; I’ll try to review it some day and compare it to that of makuu.

3. Also note that, as far as the iPAQ hx4700 ROM’s are concerned, there are slightly improved versions of the reviewed PDAV61KBD fixing, for example, the lack of the above-mentioned cursor mode switcher link. sanjay1951 has also released a lite version of the ROM removing bloatware like Internet Explorer, games, WMP, PowerPoint and some other less-useful software like BT Phone Manager. Algasystems and Da_G have also released some slightly updated / teaked ROM’s. These ROM’s are all linked from the main hx4700 WM6.1 thread. Make sure you check out the individual posts discussing these ROM versions; the thread starter post also lists the number of the post containing the related info. For example, sanjay1951’s latest (and, therefore, most recommended) two versions (a full and a “lite” version) are explained in detailed in post #425; that is, HERE.

UPDATE (05.03/2008): For my just-published HP iPAQ 210 in-depth review, I’ve thoroughly tested the (multimedia) performance of the tested WM6.1 ROM’s and found them excellent. Also, I’ve specifically tested whether the ImageOn and the 2700G driver is correctly utilized by multimedia player apps aware of them in the iPAQ hx4700 and the Dell Axim x51v, respectively. They are. All in all, well done ROM cookers

See see Section 1.4 HERE for more info & numeric results (cross-posted to: PPCT, AximSite, XDA-Devs, BH, HF, MoDaCo.)

i am still running 2003SE on my 4700, do you think it is worth it to reflash to WM6.1 ? what are the advantages of changing? and what are the disadvantages?will resco keyboard pro 5 work or wont i need it? tomtom 6 will it work? i use mine in vga mode all the time ozvga.. and ilauncher do these still work in 6.1 or will i have to buy new versions? so many questions.. i have been following the threads on the forums linked to in your review and i have copies of most of the rom versions . but which do i try and if i fail or dont like it can i get 2003se back the way i have it now? sorry for so many questions i suppose i am asking is the risk of my little friend not working in a way i can use him puts me off trying WM6.1 . is it worth the problems?

I'm running WM6.1 (one of sanjay's ROMs, to be exact) on my now-perfectly-functional (well, except for the backup battery) hx4700, and it runs great! (Normally, I'd stay with WM2003SE, but I HAD to try out Opera Mobile 9.5 on it...) I don't notice a lot of filesys.exe compaction slowdown, and when it does hit, it doesn't feel too severe. (When it's not running its course, it feels pretty snappy-about the same as WM2003SE.)

I can definitely confirm that iLauncher will work, as well as PocketBreeze. I haven't tested Resco Keyboard Pro since I never use it(I only got it as part of a pack that also includes Resco Explorer and Resco Photo Viewer), but it should still work. I don't use TomTom or any other GPS software, so I can't comment on that(though they all should still work).

It's just too bad that no one can get SDHC out of the SD slot...then again, I can always get myself a nice, spacious, 32 GB CompactFlash card while using the SD slot for something else.

Overall, I'd say that the move to WM6.1 is worth it if you don't mind any possible hits to responsiveness and want to use new apps that aren't WM2003SE-compliant(Opera Mobile 9.5 in particular, though there are others).

well if i can find a copy of the WM2003SE rom which i think i used to have cause i had to reflash early on in my ownership, i think i might try sanjays sl61v3 version rom.. or maybe the same version but in the lite version.... i want to get my BT stereo headset working with the 4700. and at the moment all i have managed to do is stop it playing sound altogether!!! none of the posts i tried to follow worked so i will probably need to do a hard reset anyway so why not try sanjays(and every body else on the posts) rom?

A2DP works just great with the new ROM.

I use the earliest ROM version. Later ROM versions have fixed some minor issues like missing icons etc.

In simple terms what are the advantages of running 6.1 on my 4705? Does it get rid of filestore?
